Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in bowl, set aside. Cream together butter and shortening;add sugars,and vanilla;beat well. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. gradually beat in flour mixture, stir in chips and nuts. Drop by teaspoonful on ungreased baking sheets. Great cookies, these are just like ones that our mom's made back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. That is the quote that my children use whenever they talk about something that is older than there ipods, playstations and cell phones.

Is this the perfect cookie? I don't know, but it's probably been the one I've consumed the most of in my forty-odd years. It's a terrific, versatile, fun-to-make-with-the-kids, and just fine for holiday gift-giving.
