Buttermilk Scones

The author reports this is the first scone recipe she's tried with consistently fanstastic results. You may choose powdered buttermilk from the grocery store to avoid having to buy fresh buttermilk every time.

Ingredients

Preparation

Oven temp: 425F / 220C / Gas Mark 7

1. Preheat the oven to 425. Grease a baking sheet.

2. Sift the dry ingredients into a bowl. Rub in the butter or margarine with your fingertips until the mixture resembles bread crumbs.

3. Gradually pour in the buttermilk, stirring with a fork to form a soft dough.

4. Roll out the dough until 1/2 inch thick. (I often make mine thicker and roll it into one large circle). Cut into wedges with a sharp knife.

5. Place on the baking sheet and bake until golden, 12-15 minutes.

I had some leftover buttermilk and decided to try these out. I was attracted to the simplicity of the recipe;but they were justok. I added raisins to one batch and lemon and poppy seeds to another batch for a little more flavor.

I have run across several incomplete recipes already. How much butter for this?

The butter or margarine to use in this recipe is not listed.

The recipe indicates 3 tablespoons butter...

I just took my scones out of the oven. I used the 3 tablespoons of butter I had suggested. They look great. They taste great. It was a shot in the dark - but it worked. I hope this helps everyone!

I suggest 3 tablespoons of butter or margarine. At room temperature if possible. I will try and make tonight (if my kids leave me with enough energy by the time they are in bed) with this amount of butter and let you all know.

Recipe sounded good but when I went to mix it up, it calls for rubbing in the butter in the instructions but there is no butter in the ingredient list.

I would not make this recipe again because the directions are wrong. It calls for butter but does not tell you how much to put in. The scones turned out okay but nothing special, perhaps due to butter issue, so I feel it is not worth tring to guess at butter amount.

Fluffy and delicious scones!

The recipe calls for butter or margarine in the instructions, but the quantity used is not listed in either the ingredients or the instructions. I was not able to find a recipe similar to determine the amount needed and therefore never got to make them.
