100% would make this recipe for US Navy Bean Soup again.

A very hearty and warming soup my husband loved while stationed on the USS Independence. Since he was a Medic he was buddies with everyone and got the recipe from one of the cooks before he left. He held on to the recipe for years.

This recipe was very good. However, I felt it needed a bit more flavor than the printed recipe. I used more ham as I did not have a ham bone. A whole "bunch" of celery seemed excessive, so I only used 4 stalks. I added a bay leaf, salt and pepper, and 1/2 cup of ketchup. Next time I will use tomato sauce instead of the ketchup, as I think it has more concentrated flavor. Overall, this is a very good recipe and I will make it again.

LadyJay, don't ever lose this recipe. It is a WINNER. It most definitely will be on my favorites list. I didn't have the ham or ham bone, but used Goya's ham flavored concentrate and it was still delicious. Thanks for sharing.

This is a very harty dish that sticks with you. It's great for lunch on a cold day. I found that a crock pot, slow cooker works quite nicely with this recipe. I only added some salt and pepper during the preparation. This recipe also works with Lima beans. Ahoy Mate, try it, you'll like it!
