Zoo Fries Ingredients

2 cups Potato flakes 0.75 cup Milk; - as needed
1 cup Baking mix; - Bisquick or generic 0.25 cup Potato flakes; - powdered into flour
0.5 teaspoon Salt; - to taste 1 -- Vegetable oil for frying --
1 large Egg; - or 2 egg whites

Instructions for Zoo Fries

Mix dry ingredients then add wet to form a soft (but not sticky) dough. Cover and hold in refrigerator overnight.

Adjust consistancy of the dough with milk or potato as needed to allow rolling it out. Dust counter and rolling pin with potato flour. Roll out to about 3/8 inch thick (a bit thicker than pie crust). Use cookie cutters to cut out animals or other shapes.

Heat oil in deep fryer or appropriate pan to about 365?F. Reduce heat to medium and fry each one to a golden brown. About 1 minute per side seems to work for me. Scoop out and drain on paper towel. Sprinkle lightly with salt if desired.

Makes about 16 large or 24 small fries.

Each (2 large or 3 small fries) contains an estimated:

When we took our granddaughter to the zoo she thought their animal shaped fries were a special treat. It took Grandpa a few trials in the kitchen to hit on this method but they come out just like the zoo ones. [I posted this recipe.]
