I grew up on this soup and it is divine. It may not be authentic, but the taste is fabulous and the color is exceptional

Borscht Ingredients

1/2 lb Ground beef 1/4 teaspoon Basil
1 cup Onion chopped1/4 teaspoon Paprika
1 cup Tomato sauce 1/4 teaspoon Black pepper
1 tablespoon Sugar 1/2 medium Cabbage shredded
1/4 teaspoon Garlic powder 2 cups Beets chopped
1/2 Bay leaf 1/4 cup Lemon juice
1 teaspoon Salt

Instructions for Borscht

Brown ground beef. In the meantime, mix all the spices, salt and sugar together in a cup. When meat has browned, add spice mixture and stir. Let the spices open up. Add the rest of the ingredients along with enough water so that there are still vegetables above the water line. Cook until the beets are tender, about 45 minutes. If you cook it too long, the beautiful color will start to dull.
