No, really, it's cake!

Kitty Litter Cake (Spice)

Some kitty litter cakes call for chocolate cake to go with the white cake and vanilla pudding. This one leverages the flavor and aroma of spice cake to kick it up! This cake is great fun at parties and really looks the part of a somewhat used cat litter pan filled with little Socks' "goodies!" Don't let the look revulse you, either. It is a tasty, fun party favor and dessert all in one!

Preparation

Prepare the two packages of vanilla pudding and put in the fridge to cool while you prep the rest of the ingredients.

Mix and bake the two cakes as directed by their packaging. Any cake pan configuration will do. We use two 13" X 9" pans; one for each cake.

Once the cakes are baked off, set them aside to cool. -This is a good time to prepare the Tootsie Rolls. I'm guessing you have a pretty good idea what they're for... That's right, kitty's little gifts! I find I can soften them enough by rolling them back and forth in my (clean!) hands for a few moments but if they are still too hard to work with, just put a few of them at a time into the microwave for about 8-10 seconds and they'll form nicely after that. Generally, you'll want to round off each end of them, elongate them a little and maybe even curl a couple; be creative! Once formed, set the Tootsie Rolls aside.

Once they've cooled enough to crumble without making a gooey mess, crumble both cakes into the washed kitty litter pan then add the pudding and mix all that together to form the main cake, evening out the top.

Grind or crumble the vanilla wafer cookies to a relatively fine sand consistency, set aside one cup for another use. (NOTE - I find this very easy with just a few pulses in a food processor. You can use a fork or other implement to crumble the cookies by hand but it takes a bit of work.)

Sprinkle the remainder of the vanilla cookie "sand" over the top of the cake.

In a cup, add a few drops of green food coloring to the one cup of cookies you set aside. Mix well so the coloring goes throughout the crumbs.

Arrange the Tootsie Roll "droppings" around the top of the cake to make it look like a well used cat litter pan.

Sprinkle the green-colored cookie crumbles around so they look like those "chlorophyll-flakes" we usually see in kitty litter.

Sprinkle some of the confectioner's sugar over the top of the cake to give it that used, dusty look. (NOTE - If you're preparing the cake "tonight" for "tomorrow" and plan to keep it in the fridge overnight, wait until you pull it out and are close to serving it before sprinkling with the sugar; in the fridge, the moisture from the cake will make the sugar "disappear" and if you wait to sprinkle, it will look more realistic at serving time.)

Decorate with a few flies (if you want to go for that "over the top" look).

Be sure to serve the cake using that nifty litter scoop. It's half the fun of making the cake!

Kitty Litter Cake (Spice) Reviews

Yes, this cake looks gross. It is meant to look that way. We''ve wowed some friends with this cake and it is really delicious to boot. People may say, "Eeeew, gross!" but they usually love it after the first taste or two. It goes great with ice cream, too, though I can''t recommend any flavor with brown chunks in it...
