Ingredients

Preparation

Lightly butter both sides of slices of bread. Cut or tear out a hole in the middle of each slice. Heat non-stick skillet or griddle on medium. Place bread on grill, crack egg into a dish (to make sure its good) and put it in the hole. Cook round piece off to the side until golden brown on both sides. Fry until egg looks half done. Carefully flip egg and toast and cook until done, being careful not to overcook. Place egg/toast on a plate, and place the round piece on top of the egg. When I was growing up we called this eggs in a basket! I love making eggs in a basket... it's a fun and easy way to spruce up the traditional eggs and toast! Same ingredients, but to me it tastes a whole lot better! Definitely try this recipe for yourself, or your kids. You will love it!

My grandfather made these and I grew up making these for my kid, but we always cut the middle out as a square. Wow!!! This is such a better idea and thank you! My kids like the circles and I never would have thought of it. Thumbs up!

We used cookie cutters for fun shapes and dipped the cut pieces in french toast mix (milk, egg, cinnamon and sugar) then put on the grill. Served the cut pieces (french toast) with fruit on top and a sprinkle of powdered sugar. Achieved hero status with the family!

I've also heard this called, "Fox in a hole". What ever it is, my older children still love this treat.

I use a heart shape cookie cutter for Valentine's day - it is always a big hit ;)

I made this recipe this morning. I couldn't believe that I have never tried this before! My kids rated this recipe a big fat "10". I followed the recipe exactly and they came out perfect. I served them with fried apples and the kids said it was the best breakfast they've had in a while. Three thumbs up from my family!!!

I have had this since I was a child and is always a favorite to make. My Mother said they were "POPEYE EGGS". My Mother and I never heard of this recipe being called "Birds Nest". When my Mother was a child, that is what they would call this breakfast dish! I normally take the middle portion of the bread and eat it when I cook the eggs! Always yummy!

I put the cut out bread back on top of the eggs to hide them. When the kids picked up the circles they were so surprised!

These are great but you can only cook a few at a time.
