Subject: An easy recipe for a 13 year old

My name is Jonathan and I'm starting to like to cook and make my own meals so far I've only helped my mom make Argentine milanesa and made myself boiled, scrabbled, and fried eggs. It would be great if someone could show me a easy meal to make since i spend most of  mytime inside. So if anyone could please show me the way to chef stardom! :D

Hi Jonathan!

Have you ever had chili?  It's a pretty easy recipe, and it's a great one to try with your mom's help.  Here's a recipe I like:

Sorry, link fixed!

Here's another fun recipe, not a main dish, but great for dessert or a snack:

The best thing to cook is something you are hungry for! But, it would be nice to know if you only want to make a single servng for youself (pretty hard) or a main dish or side dish for your family (easier). Maccaroni and cheese and meatloaf are pretty adventuresome but easily within your capabilties. Don't be afraid to try packaged products where all you do is add small things. You'll still learn how to be organized and how to handle cookware and tools, very useful skills. As your food handling skills increase, so will your confidence in your ability to tacklle bigger projects! read all the recipes for a  given food on this site, you'll start to see principals and learn the commonalities of the recipes. Good luck!

One of the first things my mom let me make for the family when I started cooking was Tacos.  Just brown the ground beef, season to taste (I use one of those pouches of taco seasoning, its easier).  Cut up a tomato and onion (green, red or whatever you have on hand).  Shred some cheddar cheese, and some lettuce.  Everyone gets to layer their own into soft and/or hard shells.  Serve with salsa, guacamole and sour cream as desired.

One of the other easy things I let the kids make is pasta.  Its very easy and you can experiment with pre-made sauces which you can augment by adding some of your own touches or you can start with a recipe you like and make an easy sauce yourself.  Try a fresh tomato basil sauce, (there are several variations) this is very simple, but very tasty.

I have a 12year old daughter and she loves pasta. She has learned to make her favorite.I keep cooked chicken in the freezer for her to use or she may use the chicken from one of those pre-cooked ones you get at the grocery.

Cook bow-tie(or fav pasta) according to package.

In medium skillet,Heat 1/2 stick butter and 1 tsp minced garlic for 3-4 minutes over medium heat. Add 1 cup milk, cooked chicken and 1/4c sliced mushrooms til heated through(about 15min if chicken is frozen).

Pour over pasta. Garnish with Parmesan cheese.

Hope this helps.

I think it's great to start cooking when you're young, I started at age 5 with my grandmother.

Since you prepare eggs, I take it your pretty comfortable with the stove - just in case, you can email me at docmike3@gmail.com with any questions.

First decide what you want to cook, don't feel intimated by any recipe  that sounds intriguing - go for it. But don't get discouraged if it doesn't turn out as planned, after all you're just learning.

Then email me and I'll help you along the way - for instance have you considered Gumbo ? ...or Maple Flavored Pork Chops?? If you can fry an egg you can prepare these dishes.

Best of luck,

docmike3
