Subject: New Study: Calories are what matters most

The New York Times reports on an interesting study that suggests that focusing on calories is ultimately the most effective way to lose weight.

(I know people feel passionately about diet methods and don't want to start a big argument here, merely pointing out this interesting study.)

Actually, the title of the NYT article is misleading.  The NEJM study says that patients who focussed on SOMETHING (whether calories, fat, or carbs) lost weight.  Other studies have shown that just keeping a journal of everything you eat also helps people to lose weight.  Some are referring this to mindful eating.

Another factor here is ADHERENCE.  It makes intuitive sense that adherence to a sensible diet plan brings better results.  There is the case of a fibrate study where the investigators noted that subjects who stuck with their placebo fared significantly better than those who did not take their placebo as they were supposed to.

Very good point Renee you're absolutely right!

Hi Steve,   This is the way I used to diet years and years ago, only counting calories.  It does work!  I have been counting calories for about 2 weeks now. I don't feel deprived of any of the things I like. I am happy to say that even with drinking a glass or two of wine, having some chocolate, pizza or whatever else I am wanting if it fits into my calories of 1200 a day it works.  I have now lost 7 pounds in less than 2 weeks,  I even allow myself a cheat day and I go over my calories allowed.  I am walking more than I did now as the weather is getting warmer here in Maine.  I know that is helping too! The free application on my iphone Lose It is making it very easy for me to keep track of it all, It too is helping me.  Sure hope to continue this and get somewhere this time.  Of course I will be looking for healthier recipes now on Big Oven.
