BigOven
Change Log
See what
we've been cooking for you.
|
We're constantly working to make
BigOven better! We try to keep the latest download on our site current with new improvements,
but that certainly doesn't mean you have to upgrade every time we post a
build. When you upgrade is up to you. We get a lot of great suggestions for
improvements from loyal BigOven users on our
Message Board.
So if you've got a feature idea, or a request for a fix, please stop by
and make yourself heard; we're listening. (If you've got a fix
request, we really appreciate it if you can give us specific steps to
reproduce the problem, as well as tell us which version of Windows
you're running.)
Attached is a short list of what's new from
release to release. The list below and our releases are cumulative.
That means that when you upgrade, you get all the features in the latest point release plus all
the prior ones. To upgrade, Choose "Check for Updates
(Internet)" from the Help menu, download it to any location on your PC,
close out of BigOven for Windows and install it over your current setup.
All of your existing recipe boxes and data will be
preserved unless it is explicitly called out in red in the release
notes. |

this may still be occurring. We are still investigating; in
the meantime, this one-click action will fully fix up any recipe box
with duplicate ingredient lines. Access it from the
Tools/Options/Utilities section of the program.)

- NOTE: If you've customized your own themes to
add page breaks in them, or it's been a long time since you've updated,
we'd recommend copying in the new recipe theme files, by going into your
"My BigOven Recipes\Themes" folder, and renaming (or deleting) your old
recipethemeX.htm files, and allowing the installer to copy in new
versions of these files (which it will do automatically if it cannot

"teaspoons" during import. Now fixed. See
this thread.
What's New in version 1.8.965 (Apr, 2006)
- Bug fix: Using screen import to capture a

BigOven into thinking that the recipe had a link to a posted recipe
online. This has been fixed.
What's New in version 1.8.964 (Mar, 2006)
- Bug fix: The 9th and 10th custom tags in the
dropdown were erroneously sending a signal to "show marked" recipes.
This has been fixed.
- Aesthetically improved "recipetheme0".
(To get this file, first rename your "recipetheme0.htm" file in your "My
BigOven Themes" directory, and then install the upgrade.)
What's New in version 1.8.963 (Jan, 2006)
- Bug Fix: Loading a new recipe box via the open

data from being overwritten when switching recipe boxes (in the event of

- The default directory shown for the "Browse..."
button (to assign pictures) is now the "Pictures" subfolder of whatever
recipe box you are viewing at the time. (thread)
- Warning for improperly formatted ingredient lines now
displays only once, letting you fix the line without interference (thread)

occasional stray short lines.
- There is a new checkbox in Tools/Options, "Always
Analyze Nutrition", which, when checked ON, will automatically attempt
to auto-link a recipe's nutrients whenever that recipe is loaded into
the view. (Doing so slows down your navigation performance
slightly due to these calculations, and for that reason its default is
"Off", but this may be very useful to those who are specifically
using BigOven to analyze nutritional content.)
- Eliminated the "Now please enter the recipe...
dialog" when creating new recipes.
- Slightly expanded the field size for units, so
recipes posted to the archive don't have truncated ingredient
measurements that look like: "1 can (12 ounce Tomato Soup".
- Directly editing an ingredient's Department on a
shopping list will be remembered on future uses of that ingredient.
(thread)
- Includes an attempted resolution for a
graphics/repaint issue reported by some users that use certain graphics
accelerator cards (thread)
- Bulk move operations were leaving vestige ingredient
lines around, which showed up as "shadow" ingredient lines when
adding new recipes in a box that just had a bulk-move operation done.
Fixed. (thread)
- Greatly improved accuracy on Screen Import operations
(thread)
- Added a couple of web links to answers to Frequently
Asked Questions to the Help menu
1.8.96 is the Final Update for 1.x
With this release, we be bringing to an end the
free version update stream for the 1.x version of
BigOven. In 2006, we will be introducing an optional
subscription plan (tentative price: approx. $19/year) for customers to get
subsequent major and minor upgrades to BigOven as well as new and powerful
features on the website.
Note, this subscription plan will be an
optional one -- your version of BigOven will continue to work for you
as-is, and basic access to the site will remain free. What we are saying
is that we will be introducing some new and highly useful features to
those who opt into the BigOven annual subscription, and this will include
ongoing updates. More news to come on this annual subscription offering
will be provided when we're ready to talk about it in greater detail, but
we want to give you a heads-up today.
What's New in version 1.8.953 (Sep 22, 2005)
- New Weekly Meal Plan printout and view. See
this thread, among others.
- Shopping list is now centered in printout, with
slightly more attractive fonts
What's New in version 1.8.952 (Sep 10, 2005)
- Recipes copied to the clipboard now carry the scaling
that you've applied
- Recipes copied to the clipboard support fractions in
serving sizes See
this thread.
- New web navigation toolbar -- updated look
- New web navigation button -- "My Favorites" link (the
heart on the toolbar). This takes you straight to your "My
Favorites" list of recipes from BigOven.com.
- Screen Import now has a "Short Description" button to
allow for easier capturing of the short description. See
this thread.
- New button: Show/Hide Web Address bar.
Allows for a tidier interface.
- Corrected fix for non-US customers who write dates in "dd/mm/yy"
format rather than the US "mm/dd/yy" format. (This is manifest in
a variety of ways in the meal calendar; notes could "disappear" when
being added onto some
dates but not others, etc.) This issue was replicated and fixed with the help of
Can't Change Notes for this Day thread from Canadian user kryan.
What's New in version 1.8.951 (Aug 29, 2005)
- Generating shopping list from meal plan now defaults
to all
recipes within that date range checked rather than unchecked.
- Fix for non-US customers who write dates in "dd/mm/yy"
format rather than the US "mm/dd/yy" format. (This is manifest in
a variety of ways in the meal calendar; notes could "disappear" when
being added onto some
dates but not others, recipes within a date range might or might not
show up, etc.) This issue was replicated and fixed with the help of
"Notes for This Day" Disappear thread from Canadian user kryan.
- Various minor display bug fixes/improvements
What's New in version 1.8.933 (Jul 5, 2005)
- BigOven will now launch your preferred browser (e.g.,
Firefox, Opera, IE, etc.) when you choose Message Board or FAQ options
from the Help menu. See
this thread. Thanks to djb, abbyladybug, Meg and others for
helping us understand how important even a small step toward this issue
is to them.
- Bug fix: BigOven now properly clears out any
recipe cache so that you don't experience a recipe "vestige" hanging
around after certain bulk operations. See
this thread for more information.
What's New in version 1.8.932 (Jun 19, 2005)
- This point release focused exclusively on improving
Windows Mobile Support.
In other words, if you
don't have Windows Mobile, this point release doesn't add anything new
over 1.8.931, below. Specifically, this release:
a) Synchronization locations are now located
more robustly. If your PDA was having trouble locating the
shopping list published from the PC, this should help.
b) Photos are now brought to your Windows Mobile
device if one exists! You can now simply import the recipes you'd
like from BigOven and immediately publish the ones you want to your PDA.
A new camera icon is on the recipe view toolbar for those recipes that
have photos.
c) We fixed the bug which was causing a load
error for the brand new, higher-resolution VGA Windows Mobile devices
such as the hp4700 series.
Windows Mobile (formerly known as "Pocket PC") users
-- To get the new improvements for the Windows Mobile companion, be sure
to download and install the updated copy of the Windows Mobile Companion
as well as the PC software. On your Windows Mobile device, we
recommend removing BigOven first. Go to Start/Settings/Remove
Programs, and Remove BigOven from your PDA. Then,
download the
latest edition of the Windows Mobile companion and run setup to install,
and download and install the BigOven for Windows update for your PC.
What's New in version 1.8.931 (Jun 1, 2005)
- Ingredient line field sizes -- unit of measure,
prep/notes and item name are now significantly expanded. See
this forum thread. The sole focus of this update was to
dramatically expand the field size limitations in the prep/notes (now
255 chars), unit of measure (now 25 chars) and item name (now 100
chars). In addition, the prep notes entry field now scrolls to the
right as you type.
Note that the first time you
load a recipe box, if it has a lot of recipes in it, you may notice a
small delay as the field sizes are expanded. Just let the program
complete its work -- subsequent loads will not encounter this small
delay.
- [Internal note -- recipe boxes now report version
number. This represents version number 1.1.]
What's New in version 1.8.930 (May 18, 2005)
- Setup now installs the "My BigOven Recipes" by
default to the "Shared Documents" folder (Windows XP and 2000).
This is in response to some user requests via email to allow multiple
user accounts on an XP machine to easily share data, as well as to earn
"Designed for Windows XP" designation. As a result, BigOven can
also now be run by Windows Limited Users (on Windows XP) without having
to run install again from the individual Limited User accounts.
Existing users -- note that if you end up with "My BigOven Recipes" in
both the "Shared Documents" folder as well as your own individual one,
you can choose whichever is more recently modified to keep as your
primary one, and tell BigOven which one to use by setting the "My
BigOven Recipes Location" field in Tools/Options.
- Setup now installs a Quick Launch shortcut on the
system tray.
- Fixed a bug which caused abnormal program termination
if a user created a new recipe box, created a brand new recipe, added
that new recipe to a shopping list, then added that same recipe
immediately to a dinner calendar.
What's New in version 1.8.928 (May 15, 2005)
- Released a fix for ingredient linking "training"
issue. See
this forum thread. Thanks to dearmore for alerting us.
What's New in version 1.8.927 (April 18, 2005)
- Importing a recipe with a photo from the archive now
imports the picture for you automatically!
- Bug fixed in Cook'n import process in which the
program could sometimes not read the BGO file generated
- Uninstall now prompts you whether you'd also
like to delete your "My BigOven Recipes" folder and all its contents for
a more complete removal of the program and all its data. (We had
previously left this directory alone on uninstall by design, since some
users wanting to upgrade were accidentally deleting this directory.
Note that when you upgrade versions, you should generally choose
"repair" if prompted. In general, do not use the "remove" option
unless you really want to remove the program and all BigOven recipe data
from your machine, but you can still opt to preserve the data on
uninstallation.)
- Searching across recipe boxes now shows more
information in status bar area, e.g., "123 recipes in all boxes"
underneath search results; searching locally in just your
currently-loaded recipe box shows "123 recipes".
- Small display bug in which the recipe view showed a
small sliver underneath the shopping list when you single-clicked on
recipes in the recipe result list
What's New in version 1.8.925 (February 25, 2005)
- You can now rename a recipe box from within the program -- right
click on the recipe box in the "R. Boxes" view in the left-hand
Outlook-style bar. Links in your shopping list and meal plans are
converted to refer to the newly-named recipe box.
- BigOven now uses a smaller font to display the Outlook-style bar,
making it a little easier to read longer recipe box names. (To get
the full name, use the "Open" command on the "File" menu.)
- You can now delete a recipe box from within the program -- right
click on the recipe box in the "R. Boxes" view in the left-hand
Outlook-style bar. Links in your shopping list and meal plans are
deleted.
- When you enter shopping list items whose string length exceeds the
space of the control, it scrolls right automatically.
- Bug fix -- recipes on the shopping list that had one or more
apostrophe in them, when double-clicked, would not properly
(automatically) open the recipe box which contains them. Now they
will.
- Slight expansion of the recipe results window; i.e., less pixel
width now exists between results window and Outlook-style bar.
- Fixed backspace/delete issue in shopping list editing. Thanks to Expat for
alerting us with a rock-solid repro case.
- .MX2 file import now also imports serving suggestions and notes.
Thanks to Elwood for
alerting us with a great repro case.
What's New in version 1.8.920 (February 15, 2005)
- Edits to recipes are reflected in the recipe view (the "View" tab)
without having to press refresh
- Changes made in the ingredients list automatically update the scaled
column
- Changes made to the recipe title automatically change the title in
the recipe results display. See
this thread.
- Small changes to splashscreen (reduced flicker on loading)
What's New in version 1.8.910 (February 12, 2005)
- Recognized "* Exported from MasterCook *" format
automatically for MasterCook import in more forms. Tip of the hat
to
blulyin for alerting us on the message board.
- Made Help a separate process. Thanks LurfysMa for
alerting us on the message board.
What's New in version 1.8.9 (February 9, 2005)
- Fixed backspace/delete issue in ingredient editing. Thanks to
Expat for
alerting us with a rock-solid repro case.
- Pressing ESC in various windows no longer "cancels" the window.
This behavior was always harmless to data, but left the window blank
until it was repainted. No more.
- You can now add a hard carriage return to notes and short
description fields. Thanks to blulyn in
this thread.
- Pictures are now properly named when recipe titles have quotes
(single or double) in them. Thanks to blulyin in
this thread.
(The special TM symbol and other non-alphanumeric
characters were left for a future release.)
- Improved the informational message and recovery help you get when
you move a recipe box or the My BigOven folder. (Moving your
recipe boxes around is not recommended but BigOven will simply ask you
where it's located if it can no longer find it.)
What's New in version 1.8.8 (January 30, 2005)
- Software activation, which helps reduce piracy and improve the
product and service value delivered to all paying customers.
What's New in version 1.8.7 (January 23, 2005)
- Smoother import of recipe titles that were pasted in from "*
Exported from MasterCook * format. See
this thread; thanks Helen.
What's New in version 1.8.6 (January 13, 2005)
- Expanded size of the Screen Import dialog, and window, lets you
import from the clipboard or web page more easily. (See
Edit/Screen Import)
- The to: line in the email dialog now scrolls as you type, letting
you enter much longer to: addresses
- Clicking in whitespace in the ingredients control no longer tries to
load the ingredient linking dialog (see
this thread; thanks Joyce)
What's New in version 1.8.5 (January 1, 2005)
- This release brings dramatically improved text-based recipe copy
and paste. If you've started a blog or browse newsgroups and
have noticed that the "* Exported from BigOven *" format is very
sensitive to the amount of whitespace (spaces, tabs, column position,
etc.), then this build is for you. We've fixed this problem.
To see how cool this is, after you install BigOven 1.8.5, try pasting in
a recipe or two from our
sample blog,
and you'll see what we mean.
This build delivers a new and dramatically improved "-= Exported from
BigOven =-" format that lets you brings over recipe subheadings,
keywords, and even the BigOven ID if the recipe is posted to the archive.
These are carried over when pasting into the program.
- Recipe bloggers, recipe newsgroup posters and recipe emailers, take note
-- this improved text format now is whitespace-friendly in HTML.
That means that you can paste the recipe text and it should be
immediately be importable without retyping by others
when you post. The new format begins "-= Exported from BigOven
=-"; the old format begins "* Exported from BigOven *". 1.8.5 and
beyond will read both formats, but we strongly
recommend switching to the new format. If you're a blogger or
recipe newsgroup poster, you no longer have tousethe<pre></pre> to allow them to be easily
imported into BigOven by others.
- The shopping list gets a little smarter the more you use it.
If you modify the department of an item directly in the shopping list
control, it will remember that item's location for the future.
(Put another way, you do not need to go to Tools/Options/Ingredients to
alter the department.)
- Fixed "cannot see Saturday on meal calendar" issue for people who
use Extra Large Fonts in Windows. Thanks to those on the message
board who mentioned this one.
- If you modify the department of an item directly in the shopping
list control, and the item is not yet known to BigOven, it will add it
to the list of remembered items.
- Started posting updates without the extra recipe box content.
Requested by Dana and several others on the forum. Download size
for updates have been cut roughly in half.
- Now displaying Notes on main recipe view. (Advanced users,
this is available in your template via the @BO_NOTES@ tag)
- Added BigOven ID of recipe (with hyperlink to the online copy of the
recipe) immediately after the serving size in the main view. (If
it is not posted, this does not show.)
- Improved support for heading import from MC7.
See this thread. Tip of the chef's hat to M&M's Dad.
- Fixed keyword issue -- if a private (@) keyword is applied, then the
Edit categories link is chosen, the keywords were unchecked. Fixed
and resolved.
See this thread. Thanks to Aedan.
- Eliminated the "file is in use" message that occasionally appeared
upon exiting the program under rare circumstances.
- On backup, cancel now prevents backup.
See this thread. Thanks M&M's Dad and Dana.
- Fixed issue in shopping list when trying to delete items when in
combine mode.
See this thread. Tip of the chef's hat to planningahead.
- Made the import from badly-formed .MXP files a little more graceful
and intelligent.
See this thread.
What's New in version 1.8.1 (December 5,
2004)
- Improved ingredient parsing in screen import. Thanks to
Sheila's post on the message board.
- Entering recipes is now a little faster. Instructions textbox
now supports some familiar Microsoft Word keyboard shortcuts, like
ctrl-backspace to delete a word, ctrl-LeftArrow to move the cursor back
a word, ctrl-ForwardArrow to move cursor forward a word.
- MXP import can now import recipes in Macintosh MasterCook format.
Thanks to rcowan for his
post.
What's New in version 1.8.1 (November,
2004)
- Fixed apostrophes in prep-notes field. Thanks to
sagman's find here
- Improved "import" and "rate it" button graphics
- Added @BO_NOTES@ in recipe theme area. See
this thread. again, a tip of the hat to sagman.
What's New in version 1.8 (November,
2004)
What's New in version 1.7.7 (November,
2004)
- This release contains major enhancements to the nutrition linking
process.
Specifically, when you create a link between a given ingredient by
double-clicking on the scale icon (e.g., 1 clove of garlic = 2 ts of
garlic), your new units of measure will be remembered for all subsequent entries of that
ingredient, and BigOven is also much smarter about unit conversion.
In the example just given, all the subsequent recipes you enter that call for 3 cloves of garlic will
auto-link, as will 1 1/2 cloves of garlic, 1 clove of garlic, 5 grams of
garlic, and more. In this way, you'll discover that BigOven's nutrition linking gets
significantly "smarter" over time. The more you use the program,
the more BigOven will automatically link the ingredients in as you type
them.
- You can now create an unlimited number of new units of measure for
any ingredient.
- New Unit Converter (available from the Tools menu) lets you easily convert between
volumes, weights and temperatures.
- Nutrients window now resizes more elegantly; no more overlapping
windows.
- More condensed "nutrition facts" display.
- Closing out of the program now automatically cleans up temporary
directory, speeding up navigation.
- Changed behavior of new/save nutrients to be more intuitive.
- Update to "you're offline" message, noting to the user that blocked
access could also be a firewall issue.
What's new for Mobile / PDA Users in version 1.7.7 (November, 2004)
- Windows Mobile / Pocket PC users MUST also
download the new version of the Windows Mobile PDA software when
upgrading to release 1.7.7. We've introduced some new
features that require you to upgrade your BigOven Mobile software.
You can download the new Windows Mobile companion
here; simply cradle your PDA and install over the existing
application.
- Your own ingredient list is automatically sent to Palm or Pocket PC,
making it easier to build lists by tapping.
- Added final internal support for BigOven Palm Companion v1.0.
The BigOven Palm Companion lets you read recipes and shopping lists and
carry them with you on your Palm OS device, and is coming this month.
- Publish to Mobile Dialog now allows you to publish your next 14
days' worth of recipes on your meal plan to your Palm or Pocket PC
device, by default.
What's New in Version 1.7.5 (October 23,
2004)
- This release contains a big improvement for
free trial users -- we have removed most limitations for free trial
users, while keeping the evaluation limit at 30 days. Free
evaluators can create and open new recipe boxes, and we have expanded
the recipe box size in the trial version to 2,000.
- The program now installs the following
additional recipe boxes: vegetarian, weight watchers, mixeddrinks,
lowcarb, and crockpot.
- Improvements to the edit-nutrients dialog,
which makes navigating through nutrients easier. Also expanded
size of nutrition linking window. (See
this forum thread.)
- Code is now Authenticode-signed as coming from
Lakefront Software, Inc.; users no longer see "Unknown publisher" in
setup.
- Minor bug fix: This build
also contains an attempted resolution for the
GetLongPathName
error reported by one NT 4.0 user. We could not reproduce this
error in our labs but attempted with this build to address it and are
awaiting confirmation.
What's New in Version 1.7.4
(October 10, 2004)
- Print recipes in 4 x 6" or 3 x 5" recipe card
format
- Change the web view size via new toolbar
option -- View / Text Size
What's New in Version 1.7.3
(October 5, 2004)
- You can now choose the backup location in the
"Backup BigOven Files" command on the file menu.
(Feature request from the Message Board.)
- You can now tell BigOven where the 'My BigOven
Recipes' folder is, should you move this to another disk drive or directory.
(Feature request from the Message Board.)
- Clicking on the header in the recipe results
will sort the results alphabetically or by star rating.
- Display bug fix related to
this message posted to the message board.
- Improved aesthetics and instructions for
posting a recipe to the archive.
What's New in Version 1.7.1
- NEW: You can highlight any recipe
result set and right click and choose "Move to recipe box", or "Copy to
recipe box". Recipe data, nutrition information and photos will be
moved or copied to the destination recipe box. This was suggested
several weeks ago by several people in the "Feature Request" area of our
