    newbie help

I am new here so forgive me for my simple question.
Is there some sort of tutorial in this program that will show or guide me through the basics of using this program? Either online or in the program itself?
Is there a "help" button or anything?
I have just read of the user's guide.
    Thank you,
    genet

    Re: newbie help

I am also new here, having just purchased this program the 7th of this month.  I'm also migrating over from Living Cookbook.  So far, this program looks GREAT! Smile  I am also looking for a tutorial somewhere.  I also have some printing questions:  Can you print directing to either 4x6 or 3x5 cards?

When looking through the forums, it seems I can't view the threaded format!  This is very irritating as I would like to know what information is there on a post in its entirety.

I have found that when I want to go to File in the program, that the alt+F does not work; seems I have to physically click on the word File at the top of the menu.  Is there no way that the windows shortcuts / hotkeys will work with the software?

Well, I think that's all the questions I have for now; course I'm just getting started! Wink

I'd like to commend the developers of this software; I can't wait to get started with the program!

    TIA for everyone's help!

Oh, one more thing .... is there some option that I can set so that I receive an email with the answer to my post?

    Thanks, again!

    Hi Genet,

Welcome aboard!  Here are a few resources that might be helpful, beyond the 22-page Getting Started guide that it sounds like you've already located:

    1)  The "Tips" section of this forum.

    2)  The "FAQ" section of this forum.

    3)  The Help within the program -- press F1 to bring it up.

    Re: newbie help

Welcome!  Thanks for your comments.  We'll take the questions one by one:

    1)  Can you print directly to 4x6 or 3x5 cards?

No, in the current version, you can print in 4x6 or 3x5 format, but only to 8x11 or larger sheets of paper.  We have this on our feature requests list, but right now, you cannot print directly to those formats.

    2)  When looking through the forums, it seems I can't view the threaded format!

Sure you can!  Simply click on the heading of the post in question, and you'll see the full thread.  However, for threads older than a year, the posts are not threaded.  This is because in about August of 2006, we moved the free message board to a substantially better platform, and during this software switch, we were unable to preserve message threads.  But for the past year, and going forward, all posts are threaded.

    3)  It's true that when certain windows have the focus in the program, the overall Alt-F keyboard shortcut will not work.  We'll look into this in future versions; thanks for highlighting this one for us.

WOW!  What a fast response!  I am impressed! Wink  Not to name-drop, but I had posted in LC and had not received one reply for over a week! (which incidentally why I was looking for something else when I found your service through a search!)

A couple more questions, if you please:  Is there any way I can change my user name?  I've looked and can't find an option for this in my profile.  I tried to re-join but it won't let me since it's the same email addy.

How do you suggest printing a recipe, since I can't print to my recipe cards?  What are others doing to get around this?  Also, when in the print preview I want to include the nutritional info, but it never shows up.  What could I be doing wrong here?

For some reason before when trying to view a thread, nothing would come up.  Of course, after my post regarding this, I noticed that the buttons were there!  My apologies!  Reminds me of the taking your car to the mechanic scenario and finding it works just fine when getting there! Stick out tongue

You are most welcome where the Windows shortcut comment is concerned.  I'm a computer geek by nature, I guess, and I'm always lookin' for faster, quicker, better!  That's where your program comes in!

Kudos! to the team and terrific tech support!  I just can't believe how quickly I got my answers!  I'm still dumb-founded!  Thanks again! .... and keep up the great work!

    Thanks much -- see below:

Your username is one that you enter when you sign up, but if you'd like, we can do a one-time manual change for you.  Simply send us an email at support@bigoven.com with your current username and password, as well as your desired change (please first verify that this username is not taken, by looking for their chef page at http://www.bigoven.com/~<username>).

You can print recipes in one of 7 themes, as well as the 3x5 and 4x6 2-to-a-page format -- see the Tools/Options/Themes area.  If you know a little HTML, you can even modify the themes in your "My BigOven Recipes\Themes" folder; be sure to include the fields @BO_NUTRITIONFACTS@ and @BO_NUTRITIONLOG@ in them wherever you'd like the nutrition window to show up.  If the above doesn't make sense, don't worry, it will after you browse through the "My BigOven Recipes\Themes" folder.

We have exactly the same experience when bringing a car in to the mechanic.  The very act seems to fix the problem, doesn't it?

Thank you for your kind comments and positive attitude -- we're happy to help where we can.

PS, sorry, I don't think we ever answered your question about email responses to questions asked here -- note the "Email subscriptions" link in the header bar (available once you log in to the forum) -- this will allow you to stay on top of individual messages and/or entire sections of the message board via email.

    Re: newbie help

Ill take the question about printing the recipes.... I print them full page , poke 3 holes in the page and have created a family cookbook out of a 3 ring binder.... I also made a pretty cover for the binder.

RE LC * hangs head in shame * I too own a copy of that , I dont use it anymore the tone of the maker in how he has responded to me makes using the program uncomfortable for me.

in any event you've found a home here .... I PM'd you my email address if you need some tips :D

    Re: newbie help

Hi, I'm new too. I was able to print on my HP C6180 on 4 X 6 cards (in the Photo tray) but the spacing isn't right and it doesn't all fit on one card, pushing a blank space onto the next card. (The 8.5" X 11" pages with 4" X 6" cards were extremely expensive coming to $.21 per card! Individual cards are only $.01 per card.) I looked at the themes and you say if you know some html (which I don't, but am willing to try) you can adjust them, but I didn't see how to get into the html code. You mentioned importing it into Word, but when I clicked on the link, it just took me to the main home page and I didn't find how to do that. Do you need additional software? My apologies if I missed something. I hope I am not asking dumb questions! :-(

One more question. I didn't see the "Don't print headers or footers" button and I deleted them trying to fit the recipe on the card, and now I don't know how to get them back. Can you help. I am sure it is pretty easy if you know what you are doing. Sorry!

Thanks! I think I am going to like this once I figure a few things out.

    Hi there,

Much as I'd like to say that BigOven does everything exceptionally well, I'd say printing-on-recipe-cards isn't the program's forte just yet.

There is a very helpful tool that was written by a BigOven customer called BOPTool that helps you get recipes into Word to do all kinds of layout there.  You can find it in the "Printing" group that is on our user community groups page, at http://www.bigoven.com/groups.aspx

Another option is to edit one of the HTML templates that is in the "Themes" folder in "My BigOven Recipes".  Technically, this is an unsupported feature of the program (because we simply don't charge enough to offer custom HTML-design-help), but it is possible to do with a little HTML formatting knowledge.
