Make editing database quicker and easier

I just recently purchased this program and both love and hate it.   I am the type of person who wants to find things asap not fiddle through thousands of recipes to find that 1 special one I am looking for.   For example, if I am looking for a recipe to make with ground beef and do a search, I am missing items that use different terms like "ground chuck" or "ground steak".   If I do a basic search for "ground", I receive receipes that have prime rib being the main ingredient and the only reason a hit was returned is because it said "ground cumin".    Right now I am going through each and every receipe and changing main ingredients to help me find things better.   Beef is just too general for my purposes.

Your databases can be opened using Access but they are locked.   Do you realize how much time and frustration you would save me by allowing them to be opened and modified directly?

I agree that it would be nice if the database was open, but I completely understand why they may not want to do that. Opening it would certainly lead to users messing with it, messing it up, and blaming BigOven...

    Vogelap,

Yes I see where this would become an issue (people messing it up and blaming BigOven) but if they can create various utilities to allow for direct munipulation of the data it would be extremely helpful.   For example, allowing for word replacements (i.e. Ground Chuck to Ground Beef) in order to keep ingredients uniform and allow for the correct nutritional value to be calculated.   It should allow for a spell checker so that ingredients can become more uniform.   It's just a thought for further versions and upgrades.

I wonder if they could set it to allow us to make ADDITIONS but not make any alterations.  Once an item is entered, it would always be there unless the administration made the changes.

While I am not sure that opening the database is the best way to accomplish it, I agree that utilities for BATCH processing would be wonderful.

Can you enumerate the most important 1-to-3 batch operations you'd find most useful?

Personally, I would use batch processing to make sure my Tags were in order (make it "Soups" instead of "Soup", etc). That's a big one for me.

Also, batch changing measurements from, say, "tablespoon" to "tablespoons" for greater-than-1-tablespoon measurements, and "t" or "tea" to "teaspoon" or "teaspoons" (as appropriate -- the batch processor should evaluate the measurement and pluralize it or not).

Batch processing to twiddle the case of recipe titles (to "Smart Sentence Case" -- so that "and" and "with" are NOT capped) would be another use... It would change, for example, "BABY SPINACH SALAD WITH ROASTED RED ONIONS AND CITRUS VINAGRETTE" to "Baby Spinach Salad with Roasted Red Onions and Citrus Vinagrette".
