    Email Setup with Yahoo

I am having trouble enabling email in Big Oven. I have entered SMTP.mail.yahoo.com in the Server Box in Email Setup under Tools-Options in Big Oven as recommended for Yahoo,  I do have Yahoo Email Plus but still I cannot email from within the Big Oven software.  Any suggestions?  I have looked at POP info under Yahoo, but do not see any help there.

Unfortunately Yahoo Mail is one of the ISP's that uses SSL, which is something the current version of BigOven doesn't natively support.  (The next major release will, however.)  In the meantime, one way to email recipes is to select all of the recipes, and copy them to the clipboard, then paste in an email.  Another way is to post the recipe (free) to our servers, and email it from there.

It would be considerate of users if the Big Oven built in HELP did not indicate that Yahoo would work IF the user had the YAHOO PLUS email.  Users could purchaseYahoo Plus just for this reason and THEN find out that it does not help.  The info in HELP is very misleading.

Very good catch, thanks -- at the time we wrote this help file, the smtp servers did allow access via straight SMTP (and BigOven could use it) but we should definitely update this.  Thanks for pointing it out.

    Re: Email Setup with Yahoo

Admin, any idea when the "next major release" that fixes this issue will be released?  I'm a SysAdmin and use Yahoo! Mail Plus as my personal e-mail server so that I can access it, along with my other accounts, in my Outlook, from anywhere that allows port tunneling.  I also connect to my POP accounts through my Palm Pilot.  The SSL connection is still a simple SMTP transfer through a secured protocol (pipe).

Oh, and for the previous poster, Yahoo! did recently (in the last four or five months) change the address and port number they use for Plus (they had some pretty serious attacks on their servers) so keeping up with the changes can be a little problematic.  The new settings are available at the following address (just click on the appropriate link for your particular e-mail client):

     http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/mailplus/pop/pop-35.html

Typically, the outgoing server address is now plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com and the port is 465.  Make sure that you're using the secured login option with your Yahoo! ID filled in and your account password.

One other option, for anyone REALLY needing to send their recipes via e-mail (along with the great suggestions from Admin about copying the content onto the Windows clipboard).  You can also get a free POP e-mail account through Google mail (gmail) and access it using the normal POP e-mail settings.

Okay, okay, last note.  One great way to share your recipes is to print them using a PDF file maker.  There are many, now available for free on C|Net's website, Download.com.  It's pretty easy, even if you've never used Adobe Acrobat or any of the other popular PDF file creation programs.

    Love and light, all.

Sorry, we don't have any hard estimates on the SSL email support, but we do have the basics of it hobbling along in the labs.  We have it on the list for the next major release of the software.   Thanks for the tips and workarounds!

    Re: Email Setup with Yahoo

I have purchased Yahoo Plus last year for the purpose of using it with Big Oven, but feature was not yet available on BO.  I tried again this week since it seems to be available.  I still have Yahoo Plus.  I could not determine what to put in the server space in email set up so contacted yahoo and was given server name to put in.  I still cannot email and the Big Oven help on this issue seems to refer to Yahoo page that is about the making Yahoo work with Outlook.  I do not use Outlook.  I just use Yahoo email.  Does that mean I cannot use the email feature?

    Re: Email Setup with Yahoo

It looks like Yahoo Plus requires SSL authentication for outgoing email (link is here:http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/pop/pop-06.html).  Unfortunately, BigOven does not support SSL authentication for email, only simple authentication.  The best workaround is to use copy/paste to paste the recipes into your favorite email client.
