Converting mcx and mc2 MasterCook files to mxp/mx2

I have a large list of family recipes currently in backup files in mc2 format from MasterCook.  Unfortunately the MasterCook 5 software has been uninstalled and its CD apparently thrown out.  Is there a utility that can do this conversion so I can import them to BigOven?

Not that we're aware of -- only MasterCook can read the binary .mc2 files.  If you have access to MasterCook, or find a friend on the Net with MasterCook, you should then be able to load the .mc2 file(s) and export them into MX2 format, which BigOven can import.

I just downloaded BigOven and would love to use it with my old recipes.  I too had Mastercook ver 6 software, which will not work with my new computer (Vista) and now cannot get to all my family recipes.  Can anyone import them and then export them in the newer Mastercook software format?

Mastercook can work with Vista if you do a few tricks to tell Vista that the data files reside within "Program Files" (directions can be found here >>  http://mc6help.tripod.com/mastercook_and_vista.htmn).  This will let you get to your recipes so you can begin the conversion process to BigOven.  At any rate, I have been using MC8 and finally figured out how to export multiple recipes to the correct format and then import them all at once into BigOven.  Here's what you do once you can get to your files (seriously, follow the directions in the link - they work):

In Mastercook, choose "File\Export and Mail" from the drop down menu.  When the new window opens, choose Folder from the tabs at the top of the window and select the folder you want to put the recipes/cookbooks in (I created a special folder so I could find everything easily).  Under Text Options, click on a format that gives you either mxp or mx2 files (mine was MC 4 format only).  Then in the "Drag and Drop from the MasterList" box, use the Masterlist button to the right to open the MasterList window.  Once there, find the cookbook or recipe you want to export and drag it into the "Drag and Drop" box.  I chose all recipes from a cookbook so I could speed the process.  Next, in the very bottom of the export window, choose single file and give it a name (either the recipe name or a cookbook name).  Then click "Export".

After you have done all of this, all you need to do is go into BigOven and walk through the import process.  I did entire cookbooks with over 1,000 recipes in just a few minutes.  Once I figured out how to change the MC file format in mass, it was easy.  Good luck getting all of your recipes out!

What if you can't open the files in Mastercook?  That is my problem and the reason I bought Big Oven software, otherwise I would have stayed with Mastercook.  Here's my situation and I will be very upset if I can't get the thousands of recipes out of Mastercook and into Big Oven.

I am running Vista on my new computer.  I have the Mastercook files on a removable hard drive and want to (have to) import them from there.  I cannot pull them up in Mastercook.  When I try I get an error message saying that the cookbook cannot be opened.  I already did all the steps that the Mastercook gurus talked about and while I can install Mastercook, I can't open any of my cookbooks.  Hence, the reason for buying Big Oven.

With that said, since I only can access these files from my removable hard drive, how can I get them converted from the .mc2 to the correct format to import them?  Please, please help I am desperate.  Those recipes go back years and many are irreplaceable.  Thanks!

    Hi Cindi,

We can't guarantee anything, but we're willing to give it a shot here.

BigOven can natively import MasterCook .MX2 and .MXP formats, as well as MealMaster .MMF and Cook'n DBF, but no software that we're aware of can read the .mc2 binary files except for MasterCook itself.  Please understand that we're not in the business of tech support for a competitor, but we're happy to give it a shot here in our labs in our spare time.  You can zip up the file and email it to us at support at bigoven.com, and we'll see what we can do.  Thanks

     Cindi,

I have mastercook installed on an old laptop, If you want to burn what you have onto a CD and send it to me I could try and convert them for you?
