    Aggrevating

Tried to sign on several times to no avail. Re-sent my password and everything was correct. Still no luck.

Strange -- can you try deleting the cookies in your browser?  If you're talking about BigOven for Windows, please clear the cookies in Internet Explorer (IE).

    Re: Aggrevating

    this is becoming very aggrevating!

I have Big Oven as an app on my iPhone but I cannot login to the website from my Mac computer.

    I have my cookies enabled.

    Please help.

Lastly, it would have been very helpful to have an email address to write to under "Contact Us" then to have to navigate to this page.

No, the free website does support Safari (Mac and Windows), Internet Explorer, Firefox 3.x and Chrome.

It has been tested under all the browsers, but there are currently a couple instances where logins seem problematic.  (However, it's the same login to use the archive and to post here, so I'm a little confused as to how you can post here without first logging in.)

You might also try visiting the logout link, try clearing Safari's cookies cache, and then try logging in again.  Jot us an email at support at BigOven.com if you'd like some additional assistance.

(Very deliberately, we are trying to keep our support costs very low, because of our many free services.  That's why we like people to first check this support message board before jotting an email support, or else we'd have to raise prices considerably.  The vast majority of the time, people's support questions are already answered on the forum, but we do our best to answer them as they come in, publicly, for everyone.  Sounds like you're using the free iPhone app and the free website... hope we can get you over the login issues so it's more useful to you!)

Make sure that your Safari browser allows cookies to be written, and that they are not disabled or wiped out by any utilities you may use.  I'd encourage you to go into the Preferences area of Safari and delete any existing BigOven-related cookies, restart the browser, and try again.

As for IE, the confusion might have been that Internet Explorer is what BigOven for Windows (our optional Windows desktop recipe software) relies upon.  But our free iPhone app uses iPhone Safari, and we do support Chrome, Firefox 3.x (Mac/Windows), Safari (Mac/Windows) and IE.

PS: Another tip is that you actually need to click the "Submit" or "Sign in" button with the mouse. Just pressing enter on most pages will default to initiating a recipe search.

    Update:

I was able to work with Steve from Big Oven and we figured out what the issue was (I needed to clear out my cookies).

I now am able to login with no problems.

Steve, thank you for hanging in there and seeing this through to the end.

I had the exact same problem.  It was agravating.  When they told me to delete the cookies in order for their logon to work, I felt had.  I don't like to delete all my cookies, since some of them are logons to sites and other helpful things.  It is bad coding that makes it so that we have to do extraordinary things to access a site that has always worked well until they made a change.  Did we, the users and customers ask for this hastle????

    Re: Aggrevating

I agree, and I think we deserve some criticism for this hassle.

Fortunately, we think it's a one-time thing; we'll do what we can to make sure it doesn't happen again.

As background, the reason this had to happen this time is that operationally, we realized we had misconfigured the encryption key used for all cookies sent by one of the servers a few weeks back.  This was causing support issues (i.e., shared login for some users between this message board and the recipe archive wasn't working properly) and leaving it as-is would complicate rollout of potential future features, like Facebook Connect and more.

We corrected it, but this meant that old "remembered" logins were encrypted using an old key and weren't recognized.  A conflict was created between the old-encrypted key and the new-encrypted key, and we needed people to flush the cookies in their browser to restore the right connection.

Customers definitely didn't request this hassle, as you write.  (For what it's worth, we didn't either, but we did cause it.)  We made a mistake here and are sorry for the inconvenience, and will certainly try not to introduce that again.

    Thanks!

The escape button won't effect anything.

Again, the right way to fix this is to clear the cookies and temporary files in your browser, and then be sure to re-enter your full email and password, and click Sign In.

A couple days ago we had to change a key on one of the servers, which requires you to delete the cookies and temporary internet files on your browser.

To delete cookies/temporary internet files on Internet Explorer or BigOven for Windows:
    a) Close out of BigOven for Windows if open. Launch MS Internet Explorer.
    b) From Tools/Internet Options, click "Delete..."
    c) Check all boxes and press "Delete"
    d) Close out of IE and relaunch it

To delete cookies/temporary internet files from Firefox:
    a) Launch Firefox
    b) From Tools, choose "Clear Private Data..."
    c) Make sure all boxes are checked and then click the button to delete

    Re: Aggrevating

I am STIILL having problems logging in and it's been a week and I've done everything everyone has told me to do...it's a little reassuring to know that other people are STILL having problems so that I know that I'm not insane or being unreasonable.  I was told that I should contact them directly but I don't have time for a big back and forth through email with them right now...and really why do they want me to have a closed conversation about this...do they have something to hide? or do they just not want me moaning and groaning for everyone else to read?  I've read other people's post expressing great disatisfaction and i don't see them being censored...

I'm done with this site for now and i won't be sending my friends to it anytime soon.  I hope to one day come get some answers that will actually solve my problem, but I just do not have anymore time to spend on this now.

Good luck and hopefully I'll be able to come back one day because I love the idea of this site and was really looking forward to installing the program.

We'll be happy to try to help you with remote assistance if you'd like. Just jot us a note at support@bigoven.com and we can try to figure out what might be going on here.  We aren't able to reproduce the problem you're having in the labs here; clearing out the cookies and temporary files does resolve it for us here.
