DASH Diet support

I would really be able to use BigOven a lot more in my houshold if it supported DASH Diet menu planning. In this lifestyle/diet I often need to add a large number of individual plain whole foods to my menues. I realize that your purpose is to make shopping list for the recipes but it would be EXTREMELY helpful if I could also add individual items like, "8 grape tomatoes" or "1 small peach" to my menu. When I am planning so very many produce items in my menues, the fact that I can only schedule recipes per-se makes the menu feature all but useless to me. As a busy mother of 9, I don't have time to plan my menues on Big Oven just to have to revamp the entire thing in order to add my individual items and portions.

Items that I would need to enter individually in my menu would include: produce items, dairy items (milk, yogurt, and some cheeses), whole grains (like hot cereals) etc. I also use measured quantities of things like dry cereals and such.

First, thank you so very much for the "page break" feature for printing recipies....that was a must for sure!

A few other things that would be helpful:

1. When you add a new measurement, such as "can (10.5 oz)" that is not listed in your programe, it would be nice for Big Oven to automatically memorize it and include it in the auto fill for future entries.

2. Please add a search feature that allows searching by "Source"

3. It would be nice to have a complete customize tags option. So we can remove Big Oven tags that are not useful, and categorize our custom tags in the appropriate categories.

4. Also, it would be nice to have an "edit" button on the "My Custom Tags" feature. Right now, there is just "Add" and "Delete". This way if you want to rename a tag, you dont have to re-tag existing recipies.

Make editing database quicker and easier

I just recently purchased this program and both love and hate it. I am the type of person who wants to find things asap not fiddle through thousands of recipes to find that 1 special one I am looking for. For example, if I am looking for a recipe to make with ground beef and do a search, I am missing items that use different terms like "ground chuck" or "ground steak". If I do a basic search for "ground", I receive receipes that have prime rib being the main ingredient and the only reason a hit was returned is because it said "ground cumin". Right now I am going through each and every receipe and changing main ingredients to help me find things better. Beef is just too general for my purposes.

Your databases can be opened using Access but they are locked. Do you realize how much time and frustration you would save me by allowing them to be opened and modified directly?

Ingredient Insight(tm) -- New BigOven.com Feature

Recipes on www.bigoven.com and from within BigOven for Windows now have thumbnail photos of key ingredients as you view each recipe. Each of these key ingredient photos leads you to an article about that ingredient.

We call this unique feature "Ingredient Insight", because:

It gives you quick insight as to the contents of the recipe -- scanning the list of photos, you can almost taste the final product
It gives you insight into the ingredients themselves -- most of our BigOven.com Food Dictionary articles contain some history about the ingredient, substitutions, buying tips, and more.

We've just moved a beta version of "Ingredient Insight" to production -- it's still got some linking bugs, but we thought it was far enough along to be highly useful, and we welcome your feedback. Recipes are indexed on a four-hour cycle -- so you may need to wait a few hours after posting a recipe to see it marked up in this way.

Thanks Vogel -- you've made some very thought-provoking feature suggestions in the past; coming from you this is a real complement.

What I really like about the brand new (beta) Ingredient Insight feature is that you can quickly scan the left hand column of the page, and almost taste the recipe itself, even if the end-product doesn't have a photo. For instance, check out my Caesar Salad recipe -- http://www.bigoven.com/recipe157535 -- scroll down the left hand side and you can literally taste the sharp flavors in your mouth.

We realize the text-matching still has some tweaking to go, and it will be a rather long process getting it refined, but it will improve over time. (Part of the reason is that we previously allowed recipes to get into the archive in a fairly unstructured way.)
