Contest Rules
- There is no cost to enter.
- Submission period begins October 15th, 2005 and runs through December 31st, 2005. (We will not be providing running scores or tallies.)
- You may submit as many entries as you like!
- Photos must be submitted via our "submit photo" link on any given recipe page in the BigOven.com archive. You can submit photos for recipes that already exist in the archive, or use BigOven for Windows to post new recipes, and then submit the accompanying photo(s). In any case, every photo must be associated with its recipe; food photos standing on their own are not eligible.
- While we prefer that photos be submitted for recipes (new or existing) that do not yet have photos, and we certainly would love for you to buy our recipe software, no extra judging weight will be given to these issues.
- Photographs must be clear of any text or extraneous data (e.g., labeling of the recipe, author notes, dates, etc.). We will not be cropping or editing photos.
- Photographs must be taken by the person submitting it for consideration. (We do not permit scans from magazines, cookbooks, or other copyrighted works!)
- Photographs will be approved by our editors, usually within hours, but generally within 2 business days of submission -- only approved photos will be eligible for this contest.
- Employees of Lakefront Software, Inc. are ineligible.
- Once uploaded, Lakefront Software Inc. retains nonexclusive rights to all electronic and other republishing.
How To Submit Photos
- First, choose a recipe. Capture the photograph, get it to JPG format, and click the "Submit Photo" link (upper right corner of the recipe page) on BigOven.com.
- If it's a new recipe, simply post the recipe to the archive with BigOven for Windows (www.bigoven.com) and then submit the photograph. (We have a 30-day free trial of BigOven for Windows that you can download if you'd like.)
- Submit as many photos as you'd like.
- Your photo(s) will be reviewed by an editor, generally within 24 hours.
Judging
- The founder of BigOven and CEO of Lakefront Software, Inc., Steve Murch, will judge the final winners.
- Employees and other direct affiliates of Lakefront Software Inc are ineligible.
- Among other things, Steve will be looking for terrific composition, clarity and color, and direct relevance to the recipe.
- In the event of a subjective-tie, the photo submitted earlier will win. (This is to balance out the advantage that late-submitters might otherwise have in seeing all the submissions thus far submitted.)
Tips
- In general, the best recipe photos are ones taken fairly close-up, sharp and with good color, often with one or more accompanying items. Recipe photos taken at a straight down (i.e., flat) angle are often less attractive to the eye than those taken at an angle.

- Digital Photography Blog put together some good tips for food photography that are worth a read.
- Michael Ray, a really terrific food photographer, has a good blog loaded with tips here.
