Khao Tam Kung (Prawn and Rice Soup) Preparation

This is the answer to the question "if Thais eat so much hot and spicy food, what do they eat for breakfast?" (but they also eat som tam and curries...) khao tam is a fairly bland and innocuous soup, that is always considered a meal in itself (never served with other foods). Whilst it can be made with almost any meat, it is most commonly made with seafood combinations, or just plain khao tam. Method: Saute the garlic and reserve as a garnish. In a saucepan, boil the stock, and add the celery, soy sauce, pepper and rice, and bring back to a boil. Add the shrimp and cook until it turns pink. Serve immediately, garnished with the sauteed garlic and coriander leaves. Serving & Storage: (serves 4) Posted to CHILE-HEADS DIGEST V3 #154 Date: Sat, 9 Nov 1996 08:21:11 +0700 From: "Col. I.F. This Rice Soup recipe is perfect also for travelers to Thailand since all the ingredients are given in the Thai language and whether you have tried it at home or just curious when you order you will know what you get ! I prefer the spelling as Khao (meaning rice) and Tom (means boiling) so for the different versions you can make a note: Khao Tom + Koong (shrimp or prawn = Koong Yie or Yai) + Moo (pork, Moo Sup = ground pork) + Gie or Gai (chicken) Also, in the Chinese style there are many more varieties of this Rice Soup for Health, some with meat, some with vegetables only and some even boiled with fruits such as Lamyai depending on the illness.

This is one of the most popular dishes in Thai families with children and/or senior family members as it is easy to chew and quite flavorful compared to the more bland Chinese-style plain Rice Soup with side dishes. The most popular ingredients are Shrimp, Prawn (choice of these depending on the budget) and sliced Chicken Breast or minced Pork flavored and rolled into small dumplings before cooking. Since the vocabulary given is mostly Thai I wonder why it is classified as American dish...
