Suggest a better description1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. 2. In a large heavy saucepan, melt the butter, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat. 3. Stir in the sugar, salt, flour, oatmeal and lemon peel until a dry crumbly dough forms. Press about two-thirds of the dough (about 1 2/3 cups) into the bottom of a 9-inch square baking pan to make a firm even layer. Top with an even layer of the pie filling. Sprinkle the remaining dough evenly over the top. 4. Bake until lightly browned, about 30 minutes. Remove to a rack and cool for 20 minutes. Leave the cake in the pan and cut into 16 squares. Makes 16 pieces Notes: These impressive cake squares are effortless to make. A crumb mixture is pressed into a baking pan, topped with a can of cherry-pie filling, and finished with more crumbs.
