Mom's Baked Beans

Recipes »  Side Dish  »  Beans and Peas

Mom's Baked Beans - a restaurant owner asked me for this recipe to use in his restaurant because he liked them so much. Told me they were the "best he'd ever had".

"Omitted the peppers, went w/onions, bacon, ham, and sweet sausage. It was fantastic! No choice in omitting the peppers... unfortunately I've become highly allergic to all peppers a shame b/c I lived on various types of hot peppers the 1st 3 decades of my life. Adding sadness is that sweet peppers are one of "The Big Three" in Italian cooking, so at family reunions I usually go hungry :~(}" - Droidist

Servings
Original recipe makes 8
1 large canB&M brand baked beans; (55 oz)
1/2 poundbacon; or more, chopped, maple flavor is good
1 largeonion; chopped, or 2 medium onions
1/2 cupKetchup
1/4 cupbell pepper; diced
2 tablespoonsFrench's prepared mustard
1 cupbrown sugar; (packed)

Mom's Baked Beans Preparation

Fry the bacon and onion until cooked and pour off the grease.

Combine all remaining ingredients in pan and mix.

Pour into casserole dish or shallow pan, cover, and bake in a preheated 325 degree oven for approximately 45 minutes.

Remove foil, stir, and continue cooking until thickened, (approximately 20 minutes).

This was my mom's recipe and I happen to think they are the best baked beans around. They certainly don't last long and this is a great dish to take to pot-lucks. Children always come back for more.

Please note: The diced bell pepper and the brown sugar are the secret ingredients that make this dish so special in my opinion.

A big hit with my family! Sautéed the peppers & onions first. Also added a small can of plain pinto beans and let set overnight. Baked the next day right before we ate--delicious!

Tasted just like my grandma's (which is a good thing) but a bit sweeter. Next time I will cut back on the sugar. My husband thought the peppers were too crunchy so I may sauté first next time for his liking.

This is super! I added 1/4 c Worcestershire and 1/2 cup BBQ sauce and a lil more bell pepper. Perfect!

It was good. I followed the recipe next time I'd add sauté bell peppers first.

This is a lovely recipe. I cooked this today as a lunch and though I didn't bake the recipe, it taste great although I have to alter pork with vegetable seasoning because I am a vegetarian. Thank you for sharing this great recipe

Great beans! We cooked them longer than the recipe called for and they thickened up nicely after they cooled a bit. We made these for a family gathering along with a trio of ribs, coleslaw, and Irish Soda Bread (with raisins and caraway). They were enjoyed by all.

I substituted bbq sauce for the ketchup and cut back a touch on the brown sugar. We also did not use the green pepper, although I would use it next time. It was a good recipe.
