"Excellent, this is going in my recipe notebook. Been looking for a good basic clam chowder recipe. I added bottled clam juice instead of the water and 1/2 cup finely chopped celery and omitted the Worcestershire sauce ( I do not like) and substituted fresh nutmeg. Will definitely make again."- sunnygal

Drain clams; reserving liquid. Add enough water to reserved liquid to measure 2 cups liquid; set aside.
In a large saucepan, fry salt pork or bacon until crisp; remove bits of pork or bacon and set aside. Add reserved liquid, potatoes, and onion to fat in saucepan. Cook, covered, about 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
Stir in clams, 2 cups of the milk and the light cream. Stir remaining 1/2 cup milk into flour; stir into chowder. Cook and stir until bubbly. Cook 1 minute more. Add Worcestershire sauce, 3/4 teaspoon salt and dash pepper. Sprinkle pork or bacon atop.

flylooper 1 year agoPretty basic but very good recipe. I added celery, finely chopped red and green bell pepper and a couple of cloves of garlic. For thickener, I added some mashed potato powder I had laying around. Came out great.
Audreyjones25 1 year agoI also added celery, garlic, old bay seasoning and dill to the soup but since I made just a bit more i decided to add a can of tuna! Superb!

cindyclark1 1 year agoVery good recipe. Reminds me of the clam chowder my mom used to make. Used frozen clams we harvested from the coast last year. This recipe is a keeper and will definitely make again.2

Brentprice85 2 years agoExcellent recipe. My mother grew up with a tradition of having Clam Chowder on Christmas Eve and she always wants some this time of year. This is the best chowder recipe we've had in years. Thanks.
Burnt00Toast 2 years agoGreat easy recipe. I omitted the cream altogether and didn't miss it a bit. I also added a tsp of herb de provence (because I didn't have Old Bay, but it worked perfectly) and waited until last minute to add the clams. This makes them perfectly tender.
