Original recipe makes 2
3/4 cupShortening; (soft: Crisco or Smart Balance)
1 cupBrown sugar; (packed)
1 Egg
1/4 cupMolasses; (light mild)
2 1/4 cupFlour
2 teaspoonBaking soda
1/4 teaspoonSalt
1/2 teaspoonCloves; (ground)
1 teaspoonCinnamon
1 teaspoonGinger

Molasses Cookies (Grandma Jean's) Preparation

- Mix shortening, brown sugar, egg, and molasses together.

- Add dry ingredients.

- Chill.

- Make dough into balls and dip in sugar and put on greased cookie sheet.

- Sprinkle with 2-3 drops of water.

- Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes.

These were wonderful. They were quite easy to prepare and tasted fantastic. I added some grated crystallized ginger and cinnamon to the sugar that I rolled them in.

Excellent cookies. It almost tastes like gingerbread, but I guess that would depend on what type of molasses you use.

Photo submitted by Kimography doesn't seem to match the recipe. The cookies in the photo are coated with coarse granulated sugar. The only sugar mentioned in the recipe is brown sugar.
