Ready in 40 minutes
We prefer to fry our corn tortillas in butter as opposed to the tortilla strips mentioned in this recipe. In my opinion, nothing brings out the flavor of tortillas more than warming them in a skillet in some butter.
"This was very good! Easy, low fat and my kids loved it. I added black beans, corn and some extra tomatoes (by accident ) but it turned out delicious. A terrific do ahead option for busy working moms like me. I also toasted the tortillas instead of sauteeing them to reduce the fat content even more. Thanks beachbumette!"- AmandaWW

Top-ranked recipe named "Spicy Chicken Tortilla Soup"
In a large saucepan, cook the onion and the garlic in the oil until the onion is softened. Add the chilies, tomatoes with their juice, broth, lemon pepper, Worcestershire, chili powder, cumin, pepper sauce, chicken, and cilantro. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes. In a small bowl, combine the flour with the water and whisk it to mix well. Stir the flour mixture into the soup and bring it back to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in the sour cream, salt, and pepper and garnish each portion with the tortilla strips.
Cut the tortillas into 1/4 inch strips and arrange them in one layer on a baking sheet sprayed with non-stick spray. Bake them at 400 for 10 minutes or until they are lightly toasted and crispy. Sprinkle lightly with salt, if desired.

pkaufman 1 month agoVery good soup. Didn't have corn tortillas so I buttered flour tortillas like another reviewer (buttery, slightly crispy-very good with soup).
MsBada 2 months agoI really had fun making this dish. It was easy to follow and didn't require too much attention to specifics. Next time I'll add more hot pepper sauce because I appreciate spicy foods. :-)
Keisha73 2 months agoVery simple to make and delicious. I already had slow cooked chicken so I just added that instead of cooking chicken with the soup.

LoraP 2 months agoOne of my favorite 'apps' within Big Oven is the Use Leftovers, where you simply enter in the ingredients you have around your kitchen and find a recipe that includes those items. Using the words 'chicken', 'sour cream' and 'tomato' this recipe popped up....and I'm so glad it did. My husband gives it a 9 our of 10. I made some alterations - only added half the chili powder and added a can of rinsed black beans - both otherwise I kept to the recipe and it was really good. I will make this again!

jimleonard 1 year agoGreat version of an old favorite. I used one fresh Anaheim chili and one jalapeño chili diced and sautéed with the onion and garlic in place of the 4 ounce can of chilies, and the flavor was wonderful.
