A classic icing recipe, I was given in cake decorating class

"By itself, I found it a little bland but when I iced the cake it was great! I had lots so I experimented a little: a pinch of salt improved it, almond extract was AWESOME (thanks other poster!!) and adding cocoa powder made a fantastic chocolate icing. It's a really good basic recipe that can easily be customized with other flavours."

Ingredients

Are you making this? 
1/2 cup Crisco
1/2 cup Butter or Margarine; room temperture
1 teaspoon Vanilla
4 cups Confectioners Sugar
2 tblspoons milk

Original recipe makes 12

Servings  

Preparation

Mix together with portable mixer crisco and butter, when blended, mix in vanilla and milk. Add contectioners sugar 1 cup at a time, mix well between each cup.

*To add color it is best to use a paste food coloring.

**To make this icing recipe really white use all crisco and use clear inmatation vanilla.

I am changing my previous review rating , this icing deserves 5 stars! It taste just like the bakery buttercream icing that I love so much! This recipe will always be my go to recipe when I want a buttercream icing. Perfect taste, texture and consistency. Easy to follow recipe too. Kudos to the poster!

Very good and has great texture for piping! Very thick and the right constancy. It tastes really sweet, but hey buttercream is supposed to be sweet! I made it with the 'Simple White Cake' recipe on Big Oven. Perfect combination!

I hate to say it but the icing came out tasting like powered sugar and crisco to me. It was ok but I won't be making again.
