"I have made this the past 2 years for a retreat of college students. I make 8 loaves of french bread a few days ahead and of course have resized the recipe. It is always a big hit. I give out several copies of the recipe every year as a result. Just be sure to allow longer cooking time for large quantities of this. " - Mikedbman

French Toast Casserole Preparation

Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch each. (Use any extra bread for garlic toast or bread crumbs). Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon (1/4 tsp), nutmeg (1/4 tsp) and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.

When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Spread praline topping evenly over the bread and bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup.

To make praline topping:

Combine butter, brown sugar, pecans, light corn syrup, cinnamon (1/2 tsp), and nutmet (1/2 tsp) in a medium bowl and blend well.

The bread was to mushy. It did have an excellent taste but I would not make this again. Perhaps the dish would be better if the bread was cut into cubes instead of overlapping the bread. I HATE mushy French toast. Yuck!

Very tasty. Overly rich for my family's taste. We half the butter in the praline topping.

Mine was a bit soggy. I halved the recipe and put it in an 8x8 pan. The tops of the bread was perfect but where the bread overlapped never would cook. Will try again without overlapping the bread.

I made it and had no problem with sogginess. It was delicious...but the fat and caloric content is over thebtop.. Will try to perhaps cut the topping in half.
