Barb's Beef Stew

Recipes »  Soups, Stews and Chili  »  Stews

Cooking in a slow cooker makes the meat extra tender. A wonderful way to make beef stew.

It sounded good but was just alright

I cooked this on the stove and added Lima beans instead of peas and mushrooms. I also cut back on salt and pepper and added dumplings.

came out great! I took out the mushrooms because my husband hates them, and took out peas because that sounded wired to me and put in green beans and squash.

Agree with the reviews that said it was thin/soup like. To the person who posted the recipe, yes, I followed the directions and used the flour. I added some corn starch to thicken it up.

The stew when made in a slow cooker, is more like soup than stew. In the future I will add some other veggies as well as some tomatoes to liven up the flavor a bit more.

id give this 3.5 stars if possible. With the exception of the mushrooms, which i dont care for, we made this the same way. We let it cook for 10 hours, but found it to be quite liquidy, i used some instant potato flakes to thicken the stew up and that helped a lot. I would say its a 'solid' meal...its not going to blow your mind, but its good. We will have this again...the kids liked it to.

I was very surprised to hear that trooper57 had a thin stew! This stew definitely turns out very thick and stew-like every time, not even slightly soupy. That's partly why our family likes it. (Is it possible trooper57 left out that half cup of flour? I'm just stumped.) If you look at the picture, you can see how it usually looks. Anyway--I was sorry to hear that the recipe didn't turn out the right way for you, trooper57--I've made it a million times using this recipe, and it always turns out very thick. Just throwing that out there, as a bit of info for others who might use the recipe: it'll be nice and thick, don't worry! :) [I posted this recipe.]
