Sausage Gravy (for Biscuits and Gravy)

Wonderful version of this comfort-food favorite!

"Nothing goes as well well with biscuits, as does a good rich, creamy, sausage gravy. This simple, tasty sausage gravy fits that bill. I decided to try this recipe because it included nutmeg. I have never used nutmeg in sausage gravy. It made for a very interesting and very delicious taste twist. If your not a nutmeg fancier, you may want to reduce the nutmeg a little -- say, from about 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. -- but don't eliminate it altogether. Nutmeg is what makes this version unique." - sgrishka

Original recipe makes 0
1 poundsage-flavored pork sausage
1/4 cupOnion; minced
6 TbsFlour
1 quartWhole Milk
1/2 tspPoultry seasoning
1/2 tspGround nutmeg
1/4 tspSalt
worcestershire sauce; a few dashes
Tobasco sauce; a few dashes

Sausage Gravy (for Biscuits and Gravy) Preparation

Cook sausage and onion in a large saucepan. Remove the sausage and leave the drippings. If there is less than 2 Tbsp of drippings in the pan (because most sausage is pretty lean now), add 2 or 3 Tbsp of butter or canola oil. Stir in flour, cook over medium heat until flour is golden. Stir in milk and seasonings. Cook over med-high heat until it's boiling and thickened. Add sausage back in. Serve over biscuits.

easy reciepe! had no nutmeg but substituted cayenne pepper and this gave the gravy an extra kick. decreased the amount of milk called for which allowed for a thicker gravy. my fiance loved it and will definitly make again.

This was quick and easy and tasted great, though I didn't follow the recipe exactly. I couldn't find sage flavored sausage, so I used plain and seasoned it with sage myself. I also never buy (cow) milk, so I used organic Soy milk instead and it worked out just fine. My husband and kids really enjoyed this meal - and they are picky eaters! This isn't full of flavor, but it's a great comforting home style meal for busy people or anyone on a budget.

This is a great recipe. I made this for breakfast. I doubled everything and fed about 6 people. Instead of sage sausage i used 1 lb of bob evans original and one pound of the hot sausage. I omitted the nutmeg and used seasoning salt instead of poultry seasoning. I also omitted the regular table salt. Everyone loved it! Thanks

Yummy but I think that next time I won't use as much nutmeg. Thanks for sharing.

Just made it. Should have read the reviews first and omitted the nutmeg and added a little more tobacco. Not bad though.

made this this weekend for my southern fiance. He LOVED it. I was a little nervous when I put so much milk in there, but after a few minutes of stirring, it started to thicken. I didn't think at first that I should put pepper in the mix, because of all the other spices, but after we tried it, it definitely needed some black pepper.
