Reviews for Southern Corn Pudding
Recipes » Desserts » Custards and Puddings
A true comfort food that brings back fond memories of grandma's house and Sunday dinners. Corn pudding and cornbread are classic Southern dishes. When they are combined, you have a moist, sweet-savory side dish that is perfect for any holiday get-together and is easy enough to make for an everyday meal. The pudding is custardlike, similar to the classic corn-pudding combination of corn, cream and eggs. Adding corn-muffin mix takes the recipe to a new level and provides the flavor and texture of cornbread. This simple dish is great served with any grilled entree, barbecue or chili and is the perfect accompaniment for a roast, baked ham or roasted turkey.

I used unsweetened apple sauce instead of butter, left out the added sugar and used low fat sour cream. It was really good! sweet but not too sweet, my kids loved it too.

I made this recipe yesterday. It was so good my sister couldn't believe I made it. I added chopped jalapeños, sautéed onion & garlic, and paprika. Two people asked for the recipe. Yum!

WOW! Made this recipe tonight with buttermilk fried chicken & mashed potatoes. It (this recipe) tasted EXACTLY like the corn pudding my great grandma used to make! Thank you!

I was curious as to why a cook would 5* his own recipe so as a professional chef decided to try my hand at this one. I agreed with many reviews that the first attempt as written was very dry and bland. Since I have a restaurant kitchen to work with I made 3 batches in total, the most sucessful was omitting the sour cream entirely and adding heavy cream. This gave a nice pudding texture, and combined with the addition of salt, sage and tarragon made a very nice side that the staff agreed was great on its own. It's hard to achieve a good flavor with a boxed mix alone. I think the commercial blend was well hidden with the addition of seasoning. 2* for effort, but relying on a boxed mix to season a dish is presuming too much in my opinion.

MinnaPepina, I am sorry this recipe did not work for you! It has always produced good results for me, but then-again not all recipes are for everyone! As for ThePuck's recipe review...it was changed!! He revised his recipe review after I posted my rebuttal of his original comments. I have the printout of his original review which does not include the 'Was a hassle to make with all the notes and additions suggested too' statement. So, NO ThePuck did not say he made the recipe. I do not understand this level of maturity or the reason for the games! But if posting a poor review of this recipe is that important to the two of you...then fine. Have your fun.

I think thepuck DID say he made the recipe, and he was helping ME! (we live together) We like bold and flavorfull dishes, and this was a sad, sad disappointment. It was very dry to the point of having to scrape it off the roofs of our mouths! My constructive criticism is to add a little milk to make this more palatable, and maybe some herbs for flavor!

ThePuck, NOT all recipes are meant for everyone. If you have a question or comment about an ingredient or a recipe it can be posted on a recipe without rating it. While I respect everyone's opinion, if you decide to rate a recipe (good or bad it doesn't matter) it would really be helpful if you actually tried the recipe first. I (and I'm sure others) don't mind constructive criticisms. That's how we grow and improve ourselves. But when you have not actually made the recipe, your criticism is baseless and therefore worthless. That being said, my maternal Grandmother called this recipe 'Southern Corn Pudding' hence the name. It was enjoyed by my family and I back in the 50's and 60's when convenient boxed goods were used as an ingredient in more elaborate dishes. As recipes like this became more and more popular they eventually did appear on the 'back of the box'. Also, the attached photo shows the texture of the finished dish and the recipe description clearly states that this is a combination of a classic Southern corn pudding and cornbread. There is no such thing as 'one' true Southern savory corn pudding recipe...as with most recipes, variations are abundant. For a more classic corn-pudding you can view my Grandma's 'Country Corn Pudding' recipe, also posted here on BigOven.

This is a back of the box recipe, not 'grandma's' Was a hassle to make with all the notes and additions suggested too. Not to mention true southern savory puddings are kinda liquidy, not bready, this is more like a stuffing so in no way would it go with a roast turkey and stuffing.

Okay This passed the test of my 90 year old mother in law who is picky about everything. She absolutely loved it. I added chopped green chiles. Thanks so much for posting.
