Grandma's Sloppy Joes

Recipes »  Main Dish  »  Sandwiches and Wraps

Quick and easy to make, and delicious too! These were a family tradition, when we were growing up. My maternal grandmother made them for almost every family gathering. She had to satisfy the picky and varied taste of many grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as her own young children. So, to satisfy everyone's taste, her sloppy joe recipe contains no green bell pepper, no onion and no celery. It was, and still is, a hit with all the kids.

"I usually love Sgrishka's grandmother's recipes, and this was good, but the mustard stood out a little too predominantly for me. Next time I would use a half Tbs of mustard and add a little chili powder (1 Tbs) to give it some extra body and heat.

On the flip side, I did like the barbecue sauce-like taste, and my very picky, Sloppy-Joe disliking 9 yr old thought these were the best Sloppy Joes she's ever had!

So, my rating reflects an average of 3 stars for me and 5 from my kids." - sHellsKitchen

Servings
Original recipe makes 8
1 tablespoonolive oil
2 poundslean ground beef; (I use ground round or sirloin)
1 10.75-oz cantomato soup
1/2 cupKetchup
2 tablespoonWorcestershire Sauce
2 tablespoonCider vinegar
2 tablespoonBrown sugar
1 tablespoonprepared yellow mustard
Salt and fresh ground black pepper,; to taste

Grandma's Sloppy Joes Preparation

Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil and meat to the pan. Spread the meat around the pan and break it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until meat is still just slightly pink (not browned), about 3 minutes. Add the tomato soup (undiluted), ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, and mustard; stirring until well combined. Season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, stirring frequently, until sauce is thickened, about 8 to 10 minutes. Adjust seasonings. Spoon meat mixture onto hamburger buns, buttered and toasted or plain, and serve.

Makes 8 to 10 servings.

Notes

Be careful not to cook the ground meat beyond pink; if you let it brown it will end up dry and crumbly. The meat will finish cooking once the liquid ingredients are added.

Not too bad....I think I would leave out the vinegar or the Worcestershire sauce.I don't think it needs both.

Made this for my sons bday party. People ate it as sloppy joe, or sauce for hotdogs. Prbably the easiest sloppy joe Ive ever made, and pretty tasty too.

Tasty, quick & easy. I had to put a bit of a twist on it when I made it. We didn't have tomato soup on hand, so I used roasted red pepper soup (my local grocery store carries their own brand of it). Loved it.

My sons first time having sloppy joes and he loved it! Made a double batch and had it 2 more times (we are really busy during the week) once with rice and once with good old fashioned KD!
