Delicious version of au gratin potatoes that uses gruyere cheese -- it makes a great side dish to a holiday ham.
Preheat oven to 350. Coat a shallow 3-qt baking dish with the butter. Combine in a large saucepan, everything else but the cheese. Bring mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, then cook and stir until liquid thickens slightly, about 5 mins. Pour this mixture into the prepared dish. Cover with the grated cheese. Bake until top is golden and potatoes are tender--45 mins to an hour.
