Delicious version of au gratin potatoes, a great side dish to a holiday ham

1 tbspButter; softened
2 1/2 lbsBaking potatoes; peeled, very thinly sliced
2 cupsHalf-and-half cream
1 cmilk
1 cloveGarlic; minced
1 1/2 tspSalt
1/4 tspBlack pepper
1/4 tspNutmeg
3/4 lbGruyere; grated

Barb's Holiday Au Gratin Potatoes Preparation

Preheat oven to 350. Coat a shallow 3-qt baking dish with the butter. Combine in a large saucepan, everything else but the cheese. Bring mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, then cook and stir until liquid thickens slightly, about 5 mins. Pour this mixture into the prepared dish. Cover with the grated cheese. Bake until top is golden and potatoes are tender--45 mins to an hour.

Wonderful dish. With very little butter and half-and-half and milk instead of cream, I was pleasantly surprised. It was simple to make, very creamy and flavorful.
