Anytime Granola Bars

Recipes »  Desserts  »  Chocolate

These bars are so quick and easy to mix! We have a basket in the cupboard with various bags of each kid's favorite 'mix-ins'. They are a welcome and healthy alternative to other sweet treats and we make them 'anytime'!

"Delicious, although I prefer to crumble it up and have it as cereal. It goes so beautifully with milk. If you can, get almond honey (not almond flavored)---it works perfectly with the granola flavors. When I made these they were a bit dry and crumbly, but it's normal to have to adjust liquid for current humidity; next time I'll just use a little more oil.

Recipe neglects to say how much salt to use; I tried 3/4 t, and will try 1/2 t in the next batch (3/4 t was borderline too much)." - Errantdreams

Servings
Original recipe makes 24
2 cupsRolled oats
1/4 cupBrown sugar
1/2 cupWheat germ
3/4 teaspoonCinnamon
1 cupWhole-wheat flour
3/4 cupRaisins
1/2 cupHoney
1 Egg; beaten
1/2 cupVegetable oil
2 teaspoonVanilla

Anytime Granola Bars Preparation

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 325? F. Line a 11x14 jelly role pan with parchment.

In a large bowl, mix together the dry ingredients (oats, brown sugar, wheat germ, cinnamon, flour, raisins and salt.) Pour in the honey, egg, oil and vanilla. Mix well using your hands. Pat the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. (A plastic glove is my secret for a neat and tidy way to mix and press the dough into the pan.) Precut the bars before baking to make the baked bars easier to cut.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven, until the bars begin to turn golden at the edges. Remove from oven and cool for a few minutes before cutting again on the precut lines.

Instead of just raisins... dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, almonds, chocolate chips, coconut, peanuts

Instead of just cinnamon, try pumkin pie spice!

Prefer soft granola bars? Use a 9x13 pan and bake at 350 for 25 minutes.

Tasty, but nothing to hold it all together. Made great granola. I used .25 tsp salt, no germ and less vanilla.

I made this with my 4 year old. Although we had fun measuring and mixing everything the end result was horrible..the dog wouldn't even eat them. They were terribly bland.

I've made this recipe several times with my kids. They love these bars. We've tried using different varieties of dried fruits such as cranberries, blueberries and coconut. I've also mixed in a little bit of flax seed.

I like this recipe - very good! I used sugar instead of honey, and added about 1/4 c. water to moisten it.
