Mom's Split Pea & Ham Soup

Recipes »  Soups, Stews and Chili  »  Soups and Stews - Other

Thick, warm and great on a cold day. Filling and healthy enough for the family.

"Easy to make, definitely. I was at first not sure about the addition of carrot and potato, but they ended up being great compliments! I used some smoked ham hocks, about 2lbs worth, and added a little extra water, maybe 1 extra cup. I felt it needed quite a bit of salt and pepper, and some additional garlic, but I also like my pea soup well peppered. My girlfriend loved it with no additional seasoning, however.
Over an easy and very worth-while dish! Would definitely make again. Perfect winter soul food."

Mom's Split Pea & Ham Soup Preparation

Bring the water to a boil then turn down to a simmer and add the peas, water, ham hock (or, if using ham, add it during the last 20 minutes of cooking along with potatoes and carrots), garlic, onion, celery and bay leaf and cook until peas are soft, about 55 minutes. Add potato and carrot (and ham if using that instead of ham hock), and cook an additional 20 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste.

I didn't like this recipe at all. It was too vague and certainly wouldn't have came out right if I relied on this recipe alone. I ended up looking up other split pea recipes which made my soup come out much better. I wouldn't advise anyone to use this. Find a different one. Luckily, my soup turned out amazing no thanks to this recipe.

I love split-pea soup and this is fantastic!! .. husband said it was the best he's had and defiantly beats anything canned or prepackaged. This is a great one bowl meal; very hearty.

Excellent! I'm Dutch and this is close to the real thing. I added small cubed fennel root and some sprigs from the top. Used smoked ham (on sale because it's just after christmas).. num num

This was very good and easy to make! My first attempt at split pea soup, and the Hubby had thirds! Used bacon instead of ham, added lots of salt and pepper, an extra bay leaf, and a dash of hot sauce. Thank you for posting!

This soup is really good! The only things I did different were omitting the onion, and I'm pretty sure I over simmered and had to add water at the end.

Fantastic recipe. My wife even liked it even though she has a Linda Blare complex.

When I made it, it was a bit too thin, so used instant mashed potato flakes instead of peeled/cubed potato and got rave reviews!
