Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Make a paste with coloring and cocoa and add to mixture. Add salt and flour with buttermilk and vanilla. Alternately add soda and vinegar and blend in. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Bake in 2 8-inch greased and floured pans.
Cook flour and milk on low heat until thick. Cool. Cream sugar and butter and vanilla until fluffy. Add to flour mixture. Beat until like whipped cream.

Autumn1193 2 years agoVery good recipe. I agree that it needs the amount of baking soda and I'm not a big fan of the icing recipe... other than that I love the taste and consistency of the cake

adw899 2 years agoProbably 1 tsp of baking soda is needed for this recipe just based on other similar recipes.
