Original recipe makes 8
1/2 cupshortening
2 Eggs
1 1/2 cupsSugar
2 tbspcocoa
2 oz.red food coloring
2 1/4 cupFlour
1 tspsalt
1 tspvanilla
1 tbspvinegar
1 cupbuttermilk
Icing:
3 tbspflour
1 tspvanilla
1 cupmilk
1 cupButter
1 cupGranulated sugar

Red Velvet Cake Preparation

Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Make a paste with coloring and cocoa and add to mixture. Add salt and flour with buttermilk and vanilla. Alternately add soda and vinegar and blend in. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Bake in 2 8-inch greased and floured pans.

Icing:

Cook flour and milk on low heat until thick. Cool. Cream sugar and butter and vanilla until fluffy. Add to flour mixture. Beat until like whipped cream.
