This simple recipe is a staple at our house; and especially on New Year's Day.
Rinse and chop the cabbage and put in a large pot. Add the bacon drippings. (If drippings are not available, 2 tablespoons of ham flavored soup base or 3 slices of raw bacon can be used) Add the seasonings and water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and cook for about 25 minutes or until tender. Drain liquid from pot and add butter. Sprinkle hot pepper vinegar on cabbage at the table.
