Sweet and Sour Chicken

Sweet and Sour Chicken

Ready in 45 minutes

Sweet and Sour Chicken....Since my husband and I love Chinese food, I have often tried to duplicate some dishes at home. Sweet and sour chicken or orange chicken is always a favorite So when we crave it, I make this BIG batch that I freeze in batches. The chicken pieces crisps up very nicely in the toaster oven. I often make my own sauce adding orpange peel. But, when I don't have the time I just use a store bought duck sauce. ...like I did in this recipe.

"I looooooove this meal!!! The batter makes the chicken taste like golden chicken nuggets. My husband and I kept eating as he fried them. We will make this meal once a month since we try to stay away from fried foods. To top it off the duck sauce completed the meal with white rice. Amazing!"

Are you making this?
8 half chicken breasts
2 1/4 cup Flour
1/2 tsp Salt
1 tsp pepper; (or more)
1/2 tsp Salt
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp oil
2 tbsp cornstarch
1 egg
2 cups Water
2 tsp onion powder; (optional)
oil; for frying

Original recipe makes 12 Servings

Cut up chicken in bite size pieces. Season with pepper, 1/2(or so) tsp salt and 1 tsp onion powder. In a large bowl, combine flour, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper, 1 tsp onion powder, baking powder, and cornstarch. Mix oil, egg and water.

Incorporate the dry with the wet ingredients to make like a pancake batter. Pour batter over cut up chicken and mix to coat all pieces. Heat oil to about 350 degrees. Using a fork, pick up chicken pieces (covered in batter) and scrape the excess batter off using the edge of the bowl. Place in hot oil and deep fry until golden. Do not overcrowd. Drain on paper towels.

You can use the chicken then or let cool and place in small bags and freeze. If using later from freezer, defrost in the toaster oven at 450 degrees until nice and crispy.

Vegetables and sauce:

1 bell pepper, diced, any color or a mix

1/2 onion , diced

2-3 garlic cloves sliced or minced

2-3 bunches green onion , cut up in 2 inch pieces

1-2 tsp sesame seeds

2 tsp olive oil

1/3-1/2 cup duck sauce

8- 10 chicken pieces

In a large skillet, heat oil till hot. Add peppers and onion.Stir fry for 1-2 minutes...not too long, you still want them to be crisp. Add garlic and stir fry for 30 seconds. Add about 1/2 cup sauce(or more depending how much chicken you add). Cook till hot about 30 seconds or so. Add crispy chicken and mix to coat with sauce. Add green onion.Take off heat. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

loved the recipe this was great. Batter came out nice and crispy added a little more salt than recommended and it was tasty. Used the orange juice and zest which gave it a great taste.

Didn't see ingridients for the sauce until it was too late. Used a different sauce, kids loved it

The chicken was wonderful. I fried it in my wok until it was golden and then baked it in the oven for a little bit (paranoid about chicken), and it came out great. Threw a mushroom in the batter for kicks and it was also great. Will definitely make again.
