These are simple, delicious biscuits that are very versatile. Extra dough can be refrigerated for several days. Baked biscuits can be frozen.

Original recipe makes 6
1 2.25-tsp pkgyeast; (about 2 1/4 tsp.)
1/4 cupwarm water; (110-115 degrees)
5 cupflour
3 tbssugar
5 tspbaking powder
1/2 tspbaking soda (scant)
2 tspsalt
1 cupshortening
2 cupsbuttermilk

Granny's Yeast Biscuits Preparation

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Put yeast into water and let set for 5-10 minutes

Add 1 T. sugar to yeast

Put all other dry ingredients into a mixing bowl

Cut in shortening really well

Add yeast mixture

Stir in buttermilk (adjust the amount depending on the dough consistency)

Put onto a floured board and "roll" into a ball

Let rise for 30 minutes or so

Flatten to 1/4" thickness and cut out biscuits

Bake 10 minutes
