A basic and forgiving cracker recipe, easily augmented with extra ingredients
Sift together the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder in a large bowl. Cut in the shortening finely. Mix in milk and stir well until dough gathers up. Turn onto a board and knead in enough extra flour to prevent sticking, about 5 minutes. Roll dough as thinly as possible (1/16") and cut into rounds or squares. Place slightly apart on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 400 for 8-12 minutes, or until lightly golden, depending on thickness. Salting tops is optional.
