This is a recipe passed down from my mother.
1. Peel and core apples. Cut into evenly sized slices (approximately 1/2 inch thick). Optional: sprinkle lightly with ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg.
2. In another large bowl, cut the sugar and vanilla sugar into the butter. Then cut in the flour and baking powder. Mix egg in until large crumbs form. Take dough from bowl and knead by hand until smooth.
3. Divide dough in half. Roll half of it out to cover the bottom of a spring-form pan. Then add the apples in an even layer. Roll out the second half of the dough and cover the apples.
4. Take the egg yolk and lightly brush over the top of the top crust. Bake in 350°F oven for 45 minutes or until golden. Allow to cool slightly and then dust with powdered sugar.
