We like this dish with a dinner salad and crescent rolls. JoelJ
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Trim all of the fat from the ham. Cut each slice into 1-inch wide strips.
Use 1 tablespoon of the butter to coat the inside of an oval porcelain baking dish about 14x9x2 inches. Arrange half of the potatoes in an even layer in the dish.
Arrange half of the ham strips evenly over the potatoes. Distribute half of the cheese over the ham. Season with nutmeg, parsley,
salt and pepper to taste. Arrange the remaining potatoes, ham and cheese in even layers in the dish. Sprinkle more nutmeg, parsley, salt and pepper. Cut the remaining 3 tablespoons of butter into bits; dot the top evenly with butter.
Bake, uncovered, until the gratin is golden, about 50 minutes; do not overcook or the gratin will be dry and the ham rubbery.
Serve immediately.

Potatoes, ham, and cheese are the mainstays of the diet in the mountain-filled region of the Jura, home of some of the finest cow's milk cheese and some of the loveliest smoked meats in France. This gratin could easily be served as a main course.
