1/2 cupShortening
1 1/2 cupssugar
2 Eggs
1 teaspoonVanilla
1 teaspoonbutter flavoring
1 ouncered food coloring
3 tablespoonsCocoa
2 1/2 cupsFlour
1 cupButtermilk
1 teaspoonSalt
1 teaspoonBaking soda
1 tablespoonVinegar
Topping
3 tablespoonsFlour
1/2 teaspoonSalt
1 cupMilk
1 cupShortening
1 cupsugar
2 teaspoonsVanilla
1/4 teaspoonbutter flavoring

Red Velvet Cake Preparation

Cake: Cream shortening, sugar, eggs, and flavorings. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to first mixture. Alternately add flour and buttermilk. Mix soda and vinager in small bowl; add to batter. Blend. Bake in 3 greased 9" pans for 20 to 25 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool completely. Cover with frosting.

Frosting: Cook milk, flour and salt until thick stirring constently. Let cool. Cream shortening and sugar very well; add flavors. Combine with the first mixture; and beat well.
