Try different meats and cheeses to your liking.
Let yeast warm to room temp. Put warm water in a bowl, add sugar and yeast. Stir and let sit for a few minutes until bubbles form around edges.
Whisk in salt and egg until thoroughly blended. Using a wooden spoon, stir in butter and flour until dough comes together. Mix gently with your hands until it forms a smooth ball of dough. Return dough to cleaned bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise until doubled, about 1 1/2 hours.
Preheat oven to 400 F. Punch down the dough, and roll it out into a long rectangle. Line the middle of it with the prosciutto. Add the cheese and sundried tomatoes.
Bring the dough up to encase the filling, being careful not to pull too much and tear the dough. Seal the edges quite firmly. Bring the ends of the big sausage together to form a ring, and seal the ends together. You'll end up with something that looks like a very ugly huge doughnut.
Sprinkle a baking sheet with some flour and/or cornmeal. Very carefully place the big doughnut on the sheet. Brush the surface with olive oil.
Bake in the oven for about 40 minutes, until golden brown.
ACTIVE DRY YEAST
To proof yeast, add to warm water and sugar. Let sit 10 minutes. If yeast is active, it will have expanded and the mixture looks bubbly or foamy. If you do no see bubbles or foam, your yeast has expired.
Active dry yeast is usually packaged in small individual packages, most containing about 2.5 teaspoons of yeast. It’s important that you follow your cookbook recipes carefully when making risen dough. Too much yeast can cause bread to have a sour flavor. You can buy active dry yeast in bulk, which may keep if it is in an airtight container.
