COMBINE ALL CAKE INGREDIENTS QUICKLY, ADDING THE JAM, BAKING SODA, AND SOUR CREAM LAST. BAKE IN TWO TINS @ 350 FOR 25-30 MINUTES OR UNTIL DONE. FOR ICING, COMBINE SUGAR AND VERY LITTLE WATER AND BOIL JUST UNTIL IT THREADS, LIKE CANDY. BEAT EGG WHITES TO STIFF AND POUR THE BOILED SUGAR OVER THEM A LITTLE AT A TIME, BEATING CONSTANTLY. FROST THE CAKE.
