This is my great grandmothers soda bread recipe which we like to make for Saint Patricks day and other special occasions.
1. Heat oven to 375 degrees.
2. Sift flour into large bowl. Add sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda, caraway seeds and raisins. Mix and cut in the butter.
3. Break egg into buttermilk. Add to dry ingredients and stir enough to moisten consistently.
4. Turn dough onto a floured surface and kneed lightly until smooth enough to shape into a flattened ball. Place it in a buttered and floured pan.
5. Mix egg white with water and brush over the top of the dough. Cut an X into the top and let stand 10 minutes.
6.Bake until golden brown- about an hour.
We usually bake ours in a cast iron skillet.
