3/4 cGranulated sugar
1 1/2 cApple; peeled and diced
1/2 tsGround nutmeg
1/3 cShortening
3/4 tsBaking Powder
1/2 tsCocoa
1 cRolled oats
1/2 cWalnuts; coarsely chopped
2 Egg
3/4 cAll-purpose flour; sifted
1 tsGround cinnamon
1/4 tsGround cloves
1/2 tsBaking soda

Spicy Apple-Oatmeal Bars Preparation

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9-by-9-1-3/4-inch baking pan. Sift flour with baking powder, soda, salt, cocoa, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves; set aside. In a large bowl of electric mixer, beat shortening with granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating until very light and fluffy. At low speed, beat in flour mixture just until combined. Then, with spoon, stir in oats, apple and the chopped walnuts. Turn mixture into prepared pan. Bake 25 minutes, or until test done. Let cool completely on wire rack. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar.
