Suggest a better descriptionToast the bread and spread one side of each piece with butter. Cut into 3/4 inch pieces.
In a bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, mustard, salt and pepper. Butter a 13x9x2 inch baking dish. Place half the toast pieces in the dish and sprinkle with half the cheese, ham and sliced onion. Repeat layering with the other half of the ingredients.
Slowly pour the egg mixture over the casserole to moisten the toast. Cover the dish with aluminum foil. Refrigerate at least 2 hours, or overnight.
Before serving, heat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake the strata 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake 5 to 10 minutes longer, or until the top is lightly browned. Let the strata stand 5 minutes before serving.
If desired, garnish with green onion curls. Trim the root ends from the onion and cut it into 3 inch lengths. With a small sharp knife, make crisscross cuts about 1 inch deep at both ends of each onion piece. Pace them in a bowl of ice water, cover and refrigerate until the ends curl.
