"I really love this breakfast treat! Food is so much more fun when it has a whimsical vibe to it. I tried to do this once in a very thick brioche and it didn't turn out too well. So, be wary if you cut your own slice of bread not to make it too thick!" - lolavancleese

Egg-In-A-Hole Preparation

From: Kids in the kitchen Fold over a slice of bread. Take a bite out of the folded edge. Open the bread. There should be a round hole in the middle. Heat oil in skillet. Place bread in skillet. Break egg carefully so that it falls into the hole. Salt & pepper to taste. Fry until egg is cooked through, turning as needed. Posted to recipelu-digest by SRemers@aol.com on Feb 2, 1998

  • Today we decided to cut out bunny rabbit shapes. photo by sgrishka sgrishka

  • Heat up a griddle or frying pan and melt some butter in it (we like the flavor that butter adds) then lay all your bread pieces down. If they don't all fit, you can work in batches cooking the inner shapes first. photo by sgrishka sgrishka

  • Once the bread starts to brown on the underside, pour in your eggs. When the bread is lightly browned, flip them all over. Use care when you're flipping the egg-filled bread so nothing falls out and breaks. photo by sgrishka sgrishka

  • Cook to desired doneness (for over-easy, cook just enough to set the white on the other side) and then serve. When you plate, flip them back over so the pretty side is face-up. photo by sgrishka sgrishka

I remember four years ago when I was 8 I made this from a strawberry shortcake recipe book and they called them 'Peek-a-boo eggs' they were absolutely great!????

I discovered this dish in a movie. V for Vendetta. I didn't know for sure what it was it was only a quick shot nut Ever called it 'Eggie in a Basket' I couldnt find anything online so I assumed it was some classic British breakfast dish with a proper name and it looked delicious! I couldn't tell if there was a hole in the bread or not bit I experimented and figured it out on my own. I had no idea it was this popular. I love this recipe and just made it for my Boyfriend (who I usually make eggs over-medium with toast) and he loved it. His face lit up so sweet. Thanks for putting up this recipe for I finally can put a real name to this awesome breakfast.

One change I make is mix one egg in a shallow dish batter the bread and then cook like the recipe says and add pancake syrup. French toast with an egg in the middle.

I've made this in the past for the kids. I had forgotten all about this until I just saw this recipe again. The kids really liked it. I think I originally heard about it on nickjr, or noggin. I'll have to make this for the kids for breakfast tomorrow, I bet they'll be excited!
