Sprinkle chopped nuts over bottom of well greased 9" pie plate, or 7 x 10.5" baking pan. Set aside.
In 2 quart heavy saucepan, melt butter. Add brown sugar and bring to a boil, stirring constantly, for 7 minutes. Mixture should be foamy and tend to leave the sides of the pan when stirred.
Pour mixture over nuts in pan and smooth evenly with spatula. Top immediately with chocolate bits. Let stand about 30 seconds, until chocolate starts to melt. Smooth evenly over top with spatula or flat side of table knife.
Place pan in freezer for about 20 minutes, until chocolate is set. Cut into squares or break into uneven pieces. Store in refrigerator.
This recipe yields about 12 ounces of candy.
