Delicious version of au gratin potatoes, a great side dish to a holiday ham

"Outstanding flavor! Mine came out runny but that could be user error, since I soaked the potato slices in cold water to prevent browning while slicing. You could safely cut back on the liquid to save on calories without sacrificing flavor."

1 tbsp Butter; softened
2 1/2 lbs Baking potatoes; peeled, very thinly sliced
2 cups Half-and-half cream

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350. Coat a shallow 3-qt baking dish with the butter. Combine in a large saucepan, everything else but the cheese. Bring mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, then cook and stir until liquid thickens slightly, about 5 mins. Pour this mixture into the prepared dish. Cover with the grated cheese. Bake until top is golden and potatoes are tender--45 mins to an hour.

Wonderful dish. With very little butter and half-and-half and milk instead of cream, I was pleasantly surprised. It was simple to make, very creamy and flavorful.
