A great family-style main dish. Toasted garlic bread and a tossed green salad round this meal out nicely.

"I am a great fan of this type of recipe. Apart from the fact that it is a great format for absorbing quite a wide variety of leftovers - the only regular change I make to this recipe is a couple of handfuls of frozen baby peas added to the mince/onion fryup (just as the mince is turning away from pink) - it adds a pleasant spark of colour when plating up - and, of course - another dimension to the nutritive value. Keep them coming! Best wishes."

Ingredients

Are you making this?
1 pound penne pasta,; cooked and drained
8 ounces Lean ground beef
1 small onion,; chopped
2 6-oz cans Italian tomato paste
2 cups Water
1/3 cup red wine; or water
1 tablespoon instant beef bouillon
2 cups mozzarella cheese; shredded
Salt to taste

Original recipe makes 6

Servings

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees (F). Saute ground beef and onion in large saucepan, stirring occasionally, until beef is no longer pink.

Add water, tomato paste, wine and bouillon; cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 to 15 minutes or until flavors are blended.

Layer ingredients as follows in an ungreased 13x9-inch baking dish: 1/2 pasta, 1/2 sauce, and 1/2 cheese. Repeat layers and cover. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted. Season with salt.

Notes

This came out really good; I added a touch of sugar and basil to the sauce and would do it over again. Great served with garlic bread, tossed green salad and a glass of wine...

It can be thrown together in a matter of minutes and is a great way to use leftover chicken (or even a rotisserie chicken); just skip the first step. My simple family didn't appreciate the difference between this and ragu out of the jar so won't go through the trouble again. I liked it though!

Needs more sauce but other than that it was good. I read some other reviews and threw in some salt, pepper, and garlic powder. 1 more can of tomato paste and 1/2 c. Water should make it perfect.

I just made this for supper and it was soooo good. I used ground pork and my family loved it. The apple crumble my daughter made for dessert was the perfect ending to a Sunday meal. Will keep this on my favorite list.

The cheesy goodness that emanated from this dish is very good!! This was simple to make, extremely tasty, and ready in no time. We quadrupled this recipe for our weekly Wednesday night dinner and it was just enough to feed over 32 people. We cooked it without changing anything. May want to test variations of this recipe by adding 1 tablespoon salt or even some garlic salt. It may be a little bland for some. Thanks for contributing.

This went fast. The layering of cheese and sauce is critical.
