This traditional aromatic sweet bread is the star of our Christmas brunch.
In mixer bowl, combine yeast and warm water and let stand for 5 minutes. Add egg, milk, butter, sugar, cardamon, and salt and stir until well blended. Add 7 cups of bread flour. Dough will be stiff. Attach dough hook, and knead for 10 minutes.
Place dough in a greased bowl, turn over in bowl. Let dough rise until doubled. (1 1/2 to 2 hours)
Punch down dough and divide into 6 equal parts. Roll each portion into a 24 inch rope. (extra cup of flour can be used here as needed to prevent sticking) Place 3 ropes on a greased baking sheet and braid, and form into wreath. (Repeat with remaining 3 ropes) Cover with a moist tea towel and proof (let rise) for about 40 minutes until almost doubled) Bake in 350 degree oven for 40 minutes, until loaves are medium brown. ( bottom should be light brown) Remove from oven and pan, and cool on rack.
Icing: Mix powdered sugar, butter, and half and half to the desired consistency. Add almond extract. Ice loaves. Half maraschino cherries, and place on paper towel to absorb the syrup before placing them on the iced bread. (you don't want cherry syrup dripping down the side of your beautiful loaf)
